...whatever that means. I'm sure it wasn't there yesterday though. I think my computer is to stupid to even play High quality movies w/o slowing down etc, but it sounds too intresting for me not downloading that.

Not sure if that's worth a new topic though...

insane quality is the new name for high quality on runs where i've done both high quality and insane quality. high quality on such runs now refers to half the bitrate of insane quality, usually 4000 kbps for insane quality versus 2000 or maybe 2048 kbps for high quality. essentially, you get the same full framerate goodness with half the download time.

I seemed to struggle with your 4000kps HQ runs (normally) on my 1.6Ghz PC (1 gig DDR RAM), but when I re-encoded my PN03 run in *my* HQ (4000kps 30fps instead of 60 in 704x480) it looked perfectly fine but was very stable. Maybe HQ could be similar as bitrate quality may be more noticable to people instead of 60fps (it certainly was for me full screen). Just an idea for helping those out with PCs that can't properly run 60fps 4000kps clips...

Nate likes the full framerate. Anyway, he went over all this in his sda capture blog a while back, although he hadn't actually done an insane quality yet then. It also talks a little about d4 and d1.

N64 is pre-'99, right? Pretty sure...

Anyway, I'm seeing that the nomeclature will probably be confusing here, as I think 99% of people will assume that high quality here = high quality elsewhere and insane quality is better.

don't think the nomenclature will be much of a problem, because hq and iq are essentially the same thing (just one is twice as large as the other). as for 30 fps, that is what the mq and lq are for 3d stuff. 2d stuff i can't do 30 fps with or else you end up with vanishing sprite syndrome.

FUll framerate is beautiful. And my craptastic 1.6 GHz laptop runs insane very well. Your computer just sucks.

Make sure you people are taking into account that d4 (low-resolution, anything on a console made before '99 except saturn) is much easier on the processor than d1 (not d4). My little over 1ghz machine can run d4s but not d1s.

I'm sure my computer will go "wtf *barf*" for this too, but let's see..

Maybe I'm really sleepy, but that looks like you are saying insane quality is half the dl time than high qual? But they're super duper big..

high is half as big as insane. quality might go down a bit but because insane is usually overkill, especially on d4 stuff, you might not notice.

Hmm, my computer barfs somewhere over 25,000 kbps. And people say huffyuv is fast...

UPSJIO: I've seen Nate's insane Metroid Prime direct captures. Those were some spectacle to witness. I swear it has better quality than directly through my TV.

Except an analog signal converted to a digital storage should suffer even bigger degredation...

don't see how the conversion is necessarily worse than the method of display without conversion. two unrelated things afaik, even though it might seem like a -> d is a method of display, it's really not imo.

wow, the difference between high quality and insane quality is noticable to me. and watching RS's run with said insane quality is blowing my mind. I would suggest that nate do this to other runs if and when time allows as the uqality makes me feel like I'm watching somebody play in real life  Shocked

every run i captured should have either insane quality and high quality or just high quality, in which case that is the same thing as insane quality.

Because analog to digital naturally loses information. You can't get better than source!

you can't really even play analog without losing info though so imo moot point.

I have to say that Pirate's 100% PAL run in HQ translated REALLLLY well to half the FPS and half the resolution for MIM 0-02. :D (On my mum's widescreen TV, it looked fantastic using a 2-pass 2000kps VBR setting on the test DVD). In comparison, Spiderwaffle's M1 run looks a bit "off", even when converted from HQ, as it's a bit "shakey" (noticable at the top and bottoms of the screen, must have been a VHS conversion thing). So the source material (whether digital or analogue) is rather important. Whether or not this contributes to the current convo I don't know, but if it doesn't, I blame the copious amounts of beer I've had as the problem...

<_< >_>

Meh... you could probably get insane-q definition at high-q bitrate if you used h.264...

I don't particularly feel like setting aside 3-gigs per hour, even if I can see the the dimples in Samus' 2-d face.

h.264 is such a pain though ... only quicktime does it right and that would mean sending full quality over from the pc. i don't think i even have enough hard drive space anymore to store a d1 rgb24 2 hour run all at once, not to mention how long it would take to send over 100 megabaud ethernet.

You're just complaining because h.264 is what the tools use.
