Ridley!
I've noticed that when you get Ridley down to his last bits of health he will start to spaz out and do a few random movements with his tail before you deliver the killing blow. This has nothing to do with his grab death.

Actually that happens when Ridley runs out of health, not when he's on his last bit. And it does have to do with his grab death - he won't do it until he's in that state.

I can't remember, when his health is at zero (and he doesn't grab you) won't he just die after a little bit of time?

Yes, after 10 of his last swoops he'll die; shooting him actually has no significant effect when he's already out of health. Those 10 'swoops' may mean nothing more than moving back and forth in place 10 times though, if you manipulate his movement correctly.

Yeah I played the game at least 15 or more times already and I never understood his death sequence. In the Super Metroid Nintendo Power comic he's a coward at the end by flying away and leaving Mother Brain defenseless without any help, and so Samus easily wins. But she loses the Metroid Larva on the vanished Planet Zebes.

I killed him twice pretty easily in my last RBO with 30 super missiles and then letting him grab me. Of course, the rest of the fight has to go perfect, but still... 2 successes out of 5 tries is pretty consistent all things considered.

Ridley's grab is basically the reason I'm not attempting an RBO speedrun. It's just so hideously random, and the likely event of his tail nicking you after he grabs you doesn't help.
I'm kind of curious about how to manipulate his movements to bring about the time-death quickly. I've tried a lot of things, but I can't get any results even close to consistent.
