Since my TAS reverse boss run was a disaster (with all the pressures of tool-assistance on the line), I have decided to do something previously unattempted: A reverse boss run on the console. I know this is possible; it won't be a speed run, and I won't be able to record it yet since I don't have the equipment to do so, but it will be impressive, even though it may take forever to get it on the Internet. I will post it on Youtube in segments for you all to see when it's done. Just wanted to let you guys know now.

Explain your route, please. I've been wondering the thing in my mind for a while, and still can't figure out how it's possible.

I'll be back. Maybe...
you can use nbmb techniques to get to botwoon's door, gold torizo etc without varia, gravity. i assume it's just an extension of the nbmb techniques to fight ridley after where nbmb leaves off, and then going to botwoon, draygon and getting space jump. with the space jump and all those energy tanks needed to get through lower norfair, it is simple to reach and kill phantoon and kraid.

This should be interesting.  I can't wait to see the result.

Good luck; you'll need it.

Like I said, it will take a while since I don't have a digital video camera or whatever it is you need to put recordings on the Internet.

This is way cool ! I was wondering if I should do a RBO run sometime, but it would be pretty meaningless because I don´t own SNES console and emulator runs are....something something.

I bet the hardest parts will definately be killing Ridley and glitching out of Draygons room(s).

Actually, killing Ridley is not that much of a task compared to Draygon. That is the very reason I´m not trying this run even for fun on the emulator. Doing it on console sounds even more wicked.

I still have yet to see how the Draygon afterpart is accomplished. Anyone want to make a demonstration on smv or something?  :)

What you need to get is a TV Tuner Card equipped with A/V Jacks and plug the Super Nintendo directly into the back of that using the supplied A/V cable. That is the optimal option for recording movies off a console such as an SNES.

Actually, the best way would be to buy a DVD recorder and a box of DVD RWs.  That way you can hook the SNES up to the recorder, record, then put the DVD on your computer, do whatever you want to it, and upload the finished product to the Internet.

As far as the run itself goes, I'd suggest you grab everything you can before attempting Lower Norfair.  If you want, I could come up with a nice route for you.

EDIT: SMVs of the end of a suitless Draygon fight.

Those smv files dont work, at least I cant play them... Of course something like this has to happen when I am really, really eager to see how it is done  :)
Anyone else got them to play allright? I have been able to play every other smv on this forum...

what ROM and hat version of SNES9X are you using?  The videos were made with the Super Metroid (JU) [!] ROM and SNES9X version 1.5

Anyone know where to get Snes9x 1.5 for windows? I can only find it for Mac.

I'm already working on a "beta test" of the run, you know, before I record it. I'm already at Maridia (Ridley still not dead yet) looking for tanks. I already got the Grapple Beam, so I don't have to climb Mount Death grin new .

I´m using the good old 1.43+ and my rom is simply called Super Metroid.smc and I have been able to play everything up until this point  =)

I got the snes9x 1.5  from
http://www.snes9x.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2831
and I still cant play those files. The error message still says that I might need another version of emulator  :)  kinda frustrating...
The movie file doesn´t show any information in the Play Movie -window either.

Well, have to keep on trying....

Yes, this one works perfectly. Thank you!
It doesn´t look that hard, but how easy it is to execute... Well, I can find that out only by testing it myself.

So there's no other way of getting out of Draygons room without the gravity suit? So you won't be getting the Space Jump. That way still looks pretty fun.

Actually, I've done some Maridia testings without gravity suit and I find it mostly entertaining to get through it, since you really have to get used to the different moving physics, etc. It's fun too. :)

Lower Norfair would probably be just annoying, and think if you notice in Ridley you're 1 energy tank short... That'd pretty much start it all over again. I'm probably gonna do some testings on that kinda run too.

Doing this run on a console is one of the most difficult tasks one can choose. I just continued my NBMB run, killed some minibosses, collected some more items and went to Norfair again - this time to kill Ridley of course.

Even though I played on an emulator, I did what console players have possibility to do only - save at the save point just before Ridleys lair.

Getting to Ridley is not that much of a task, you can even have about 20 super missiles left from CF if you play it right. That Smokey-style refilling technique helps a lot when preparing for the big fight.

The problem begins when that door closes behind you and you fall down.... Fighting Ridley while losing energy and trying to attack constantly and try to not get hit is very hard. Ridley does have quite arbitrary attack patterns so it makes it very hard to not get hit. Also one or two hits quarantee your failure. It is just not possible to do what Smokey did in his low% run because time is your enemy here also. I tested this difficult part from save point to escape in real time and I had to try again for like 20 times. When I finally killed Ridley, I noticed that normal console player cannot escape LN the same way Saturn did -> had to refill more for CFs. Lack of space jump and plasma is very challenging factor here. Screw attack is mandatory for survival as well.

So if one would make a run on this and record it.. it would be hella long for the preparations parts. Visit Maridia for more missiles and visit LN to grab the Screw Attack and maybe go back to refill before entering again.... Also some other parts of the gameplay would look quite boring, but that kind of entertainment might not be the thing in this case.

Long story short, if someone actually does pull this off on a console, I truly will praise that person. Also it is a whole different kind of suspense from TAS or even NBMB, because fighting boss while taking damage from heat is absolutely crazy in realtime!

If someone feels like SM is too easy for regular playing, first play through Impossible a couple of times and then make a NBMB (or maybe just no boss :) ) run on normal and try to continue from there. I quarantee there will be challenges ahead.

Well, Lance, this kind of run would have its own challenges, but never is it impossible to complete. I bet Hotarubi could do it...  Rolling Eyes

I sure do love Maridia with the Power Suit, really. LN is just tedious to play, but Maridia with its own physics and all, it's just wonderful.
Lance Uppercut:

Well of course it is not impossible, because Saturn managed to drill through LN with such a light arsenal. Realtime player does have a fair chance when preparing a lot better. This one sure does require a lot of tries, because one or two mistakes do not make you lose time, those mistakes cause you to die!

I like Maridia in power suit too, but I find that one pretty tedious at some points. Well, at least if you dont have grapple. IMO the worst room is that big one before Draygon, it might get frustrating to freeze those mochtroids, fall into the sand, freeze them again...

Maybe I will continue my "RBO-run" today with Maridia. Draygon sure needs some testing before attacking there seriously. This one might take even more retries than Ridley, luckily save point is not that far away this time  :)

I know this is written somewhere but i ask anyway: how many times must Samus pump her arms / whatever to get Draygon release you? It would help a lot if one could calculate some estimate so reaching that upper ledge is easier.

60 button presses to get Draygon to release you.  I nrmally make 14 3/4 circles on the d-pad, then make the last press when above the ledge.
