Well, I thought of this idea in school one day. I have done lots and lots of speed runs in this game, of the same path. I've got to the point, where I have basically the whole path memorized. I was bored in Science class one day, so I decided to go ahead and beat Super Metroid In my head. No, before i get this, omg nerd u probably spent like 10 hours a day memorizing it. I just simply remembered it honestly lol. I've beaten just 2 many times. Ok...onto the point, what if some1 did a speed run..BLINDFOLDED with some assistance. Rules would be, you can take off the blind fold during bosses and thats it lol. The assistance would just be some1 watching, letting u know if ur stuck, in front of a wall, ect. Just an idea, not saying any1 has to do it.

I always wondered if I could do that with fusion, with the way I know the game so well. I wouldn't really have anyone else to help me, which makes sense because not many other people memorize the route in that game.

I have a really good memory, nearly photographic at times. I can remember stuff like the paths through all the caves in Crystalis even years after the last time I played it. So I don't think you're weird ;)

Wow. read those posts in Nate's links. That is amazing, but I can't believe how ignorant the other people were.

I know the route by heart, each individual room and item. The problems I can see would be:

A: Not only bosses, but plain enemies in the room could really mess you up because of the "pseudo randomness"
B: It would be hard to get a feel for how high to jump or when to shoot.
C: (I realize that most speedruns never even get it) The grapple beam would be very hard to use.
D: Many things have timing(such as eye doors) that could be difficult to remember accurately.

However, if someone manages to do it, I'd be one of the first in line to watch it.

I didn't expect to get this many replies lol. Wow, imagine beating Ridley while blindfolded O_o. I think I'm going to try this speed run idea this weekend :D. I'll have my friend record it. I'll let everyone know how it goes (if i even attempt it :P.)

Just made an attempt at a "blind" playthrough, and I have to say good luck to anyone crasy enough to try this.

Problems started as soon as I reached the last room of Ceres.  I'm pretty sure I didn't have much time left when I finally landed on the escape platform.

Next real problem moment was getting back up after grabbing the missiles.  I had to open my eyes to look around and figure out a goo way to do it, then went back and got through the room with eyes closed.

Then came climbing up the escape shaft and Crateria mainstreet.  I had to do some experimenting again for the escape shaft, and I cheated in the Crateria caves.

I then attempted a blind Torizo fight.  I died.

Ok, I know Super Metroid very well, but not THAT well. I'd probably have issues long before getting to the first Torizo. There's no feedback for when you hit a wall or the ceiling, and the only real feedback you get from enemies is if you hit them. Otherwise they could be two inches in front of me and I wouldn't be able to tell.

With how random things can become throughout the entire game and how much precision is required for things such as boss fights and wall jumping, I'd never make it. Like BlueGlass said, good luck to ANYONE who is seriously thinking of trying this. They have more patience than I do, and according to a lot of people I know I'm very patient about most things.

Hmm. It may not be your average speed run. I'm half tempted to try it because I speed ran to the ice beam on Metroid Prime blindfolded with my bro only telling me where to go if I fell in an acid or lava pit, or if I hit a wall.

Sound on, right XD?

The very least I could do (successfully) is to look away, maybe focus on something on the wall -like a spot...?  I've done that before when playing fighting games.  I don't know how well it would work for SM. :-?  The screen could be 45 degrees or more from my line of sight or point of focus.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I think it makes a good point...  When I used to play Tomb Raider, there would be sometimes where I'd have to look away from the screen and just imagine the space that was around Lara.  Then do whatever move.  If I watched, I felt I couldn't do it.  :P

I couldn't IBJ while looking for a very long time. I had to do it by sounds only.

Once you learn the timing it's not that hard.

Considering that a great deal of tricks that you have to do on SM happen to quickly that you need somewhat of a muscle memory, this shouldn't be TOO hard. Missile Lake shinespark would probably be a problem though.

Yeah, that would be. Like I said earlier though, you could some assistance from a friend to let you know if you bump into a wall/enemy or you simply fall. I would never fight a boss blindfolded(Oo). Well, I think really the escape sequences, r gonna be the biggest pain to deal with. Thanks for the replies :D. Ill be attempting this either Friday or Sunday.

Actually, probably the only boss fight that could be done blindfolded (yet with some audio clue from a friend) would the the Draygon fight.  grin new

grapple-beam Wink

Wouldn't it be nice to have Micheal Winslow helping you on this?

This looks like a fun idea.  The game I know most well is Prime, but I can't imagine playing a 3D without looking.

It would be interesting doing a playthrough of a game where one person is playing and another one is looking at the screen, telling the player what to do.

I've tried a team run of megaman once, one player with the D-pad, the other with A and B. Think we got past 3 of the 6 robot masters before we gave up but it was a lot of fun :D.

Okay. I tried it and for the life of me I can't wall jump up the brinstar shaft and I most certainly don't know ther platforms that well.

Actually, Prime would certainly be possible, due to lock-on. Platforming might be really hard, but you can use the power beam as a sort of 'echolocator' (shoot, see how long it takes to hit something, calculate distance) as well.

You could probably get the Morph Ball but that would be it.
While playing, you subconsciously think you know the game by heart, but in reality little aspects remind you of the following obstacles and enemies you will face.
You can probably memorize the levels, but not enemy movement and their responses to your actions.

I was EXACTLY the same way when I started learning IBJs in Super Metroid (and still am for Zero Mission), and I still have a lot of trouble with the start (the timing is different, at least for me...)

As for the original topic, I think it would be insanely tough to do, although not impossible. But attempting to do a low %...you would have to be crazy (or blinded already)
The "echolocation" effect mentioned about Prime could be drastically enhanced if you have surround sound :)
It wouldn't be TOO hard to beat Zero Mission's "Mecha Ridley"; as he always stays in place and follows a set(ish) pattern.
But I couldn't even imagine doing this for the non-metroid games I like (R-type, Final Fantasy, Halo...)
