Okay, so I randomly decided to do a "Get all items as soon as possible, but skip the charge beam" playthrough. (I can't play well enough for my plays to be considered "runs" :P) I'm just wondering if I should skip the other beams as well, or grab them. Feel free to leave comments. Thanks in advance.

I voted for 'other' because you asked if you should get the other beam.  teach

If you are getting all the other items, you don´t need any beams, therefore it would be beamless run, which I think is quite interesting for a change. Beams are useless against bosses if you don´t have charge, so...

Well, based on the (admittedly few) results of the poll, I will do a 95% run, skipping all of the beams. Now I just need to plan out when to get the remaining 95 items. I'm planning on getting them as soon as (feasibly) possible, without regard for efficiency. Anyway, without further ado, here's the list:

Morph Ball
Blue Brinstar missiles x2
Blue Brinstar E-Tank
Bombs
Gauntlet Items (Yeah, these ones'll be zazabis...) EDIT: Not really... two etanks seem to be more than enough.
Crateria bomb missiles (The last ones that JXQ got in his 100% TAS)
Old MB room missiles
Crateria E-Tank
Brinstar Mockball Items
Pink Brinstar Room missiles x2
Spore Spawn's Super Missiles (skip fighting him)
Skip Charge Beam
Green Brinstar Pipe missiles
Red Brinstar PBs(x2) and missiles
Landing Site PBs
Wrecked Ship items?
Lower Jungle Brinstar Etank and super missiles
Etecoon room PBs
Pink Brinstar PBs
Sidehopper Room Etank
Skip spazer
Kraid missile pack
Kill Kraid, get Varia
Kraid E-tank
Skip Ice Beam
Hi-jump E-Tank
Hi-Jump boots
Norfair "My face is on fire!" missiles.
Norfair reserve tank and missiles
Skip Wave Beam
Speed Booster
Crocomire's E-Tank
Crocomire's PBs
Grapple Beam
Lower Norfair items
Maridia items
Skip Plasma Beam
Hopefully will be at 95% at this point...

As you can see, I lack detail, and probably have some items listed too late on the list. If you can make any corrections, feel free to do so.

And Lance, yes, without the charge beam I will have to use other weapons against bosses, but the beams do have other uses, you know. :P

Meh, nothing a few missiles and some glitching wouldn´t cover. Are you sure you can obtain all items without wave beam? Luckily gates can be blasted from right side with supers and Kriole´s method makes it possible to get the sidehopper room e-tank too. Why restricting the challenge with only charge beam? The way I see it is all or nothing!  :)

Meh, nothing a few powerbombs and some glitching wouldn't cover. :P Although I will be doing some test runs, to find out where specifically the rest of the items are, and to make sure that I don't, in fact, need beams to get them. Also, a little practice never hurt. :P

EDIT: Thank you very much, Lance. I had completely forgotten about that room... I should probably add it to my list, then. :P

I've noticed you have that E-tank right after the missles. How do you plan on reaching that height without bombs or high jump? It would help some of my suitless runs with their speed quite a bit.

It's not so bad with a little practice.

I wanted to play a little different route than usually in SM, so I basically took your beamless run and modified it a little. I picked up Ice Beam, no other beams. I did not pick up Hi-Jump, Space Jump, Screw Attack or Spring Ball either. I also did not sweat about every single item in this game, just plenty enough to kill Ridley and MB with missiles, as I did not have the charge beam to cover me up. Unfortunately I did not record my run, but maybe next time I will because now I have some kind of route figured out. These runs are awesome, because you can perform certain tricks and glitches, sometimes you don´t even have a choice. In my case:
- Early Blue Brinstar E-tank
- Early Spore Spawn missiles
- Multiple difficult walljumps, including Norfair Reserve ledge, Speed Booster ledge, Lower Norfair vertical Pirate shaft...
- Lots of bomb jumping
- Forgot to take the Reverse gate Super in Brinstar
- Entrance to Lower Norfair is interesting, because without Hi-Jump you cannot simply take off Gravity and walljump up. As far as I know, there are two choices(anyone know more ways? I think Gravity Jump does not work): Bomb jump up, which is tedious because those heads shoot fire at you. The choice I used was used by hero of the day in his TAS, the shinespark one. I had to try it for about ten times, but finally I got the damage boost I wanted from the head. This would be interesting choice when playing on console, it is pretty hard to perform.

Anyone up for trick/glitch run? That would be a good way to answer those simple questions that people are asking over and over again.

That's part of the reason I started my run... That and I wanted to practice the Mockball. :P

Well, the Upper Norfair ones I can get pretty consistantly... And since I plan on getting the Screw Attack that last one won't be too much of a problem.
- Lots of bomb jumping
I'm trying to do as little as possible... I don't think that very many people find an IBJ fun to watch...
- Forgot to take the Reverse gate Super in Brinstar
I'm not sure which Super Missiles you're referring to here... the ones that you either need Mockball or Speed Booster for? That's the only pack that I can remember having anything to do with gates...
- Entrance to Lower Norfair is interesting, because without Hi-Jump you cannot simply take off Gravity and walljump up.
Heh... Entrance to Lower Norfair is also interesting w/out Gravity Suit... Actually, according to my run plan, I'll be getting it before Varia... *goes to work on HBJ'ing*

Oops, I meant the e-tank behind reversed gate in Brinstar. I cannot understand how I can always change e-tanks to supers and vice versa.

Ahh. Yeah, that is kinda weird... but then again, I wouldn't say no to an extra 14 super missile tanks.  laugh new
