1st segment: time:00:00 the beginning,
this was very well done, yet i havent recordede any segment yet

2nd segment: landing-red brinstar: time:00:01
this has to be the longest segment somehow and its full of small tricks so this might take a while to record

3rd segment: red brinstar-pre botwoon: time: 00:10
this is by far the hardest segment yet very well designed, here i do the horizontal spark to wrecked ship, then i 2 round phantoon and spark across the top of wrecked ship 2, on inside and the other to get the gravity suit

4th segment: pre botwoon-entrance of ridley's lair: time: 00:15
this segment isnt that hard, yet botwoon requires timing and my draygon fight is kinda variable. what i do is at the beginning spark across his head, after many tries this seems to do more damage overall and here is when it gets risky. im gonna manipulate things so i get him to shoot the white things even if i need to restart quite often, with this way i can shoot all my missiles and do quite enough damage so i can just finish him off with another spark. from here i check my health, if its low i spark across draygon's room to get health, if its high i spark across the big room

5th segment: ridley's lair-variable: time: 00:20
I havent decided yet im im gonna save at the ship, it depends on circumstances but if i see a rather average segment im gonna check my items, if good im gonna take my chances till the end. but if the segment is insanely well done im gonna save at norfair before entering brinstar

edit: ok so i just finished it and i got 33 which is bad, perhaps im missing something big or many small things so im downloading the high quality run

also my time at norfair after defeating ridley using the save near the elevator is 00:24

also here is my 2 round kill of phantoon, enjoy ^_^

just added my fight against draygon, if you know a way i can improve ill gladly try it, also this were obviously made on an emu but they i have also done them on console, it isnt that hard really

Wait, you did a run already?    If so, there's no way you made each segment as good as it could have been.  You are using all the speed tricks, right (shinespark to Draygon included)?  One big advantage you have over Hotarubi is that you can use all you Spers on Ridley.  Not sure wether you did or not, obviously.  Just wanted to point that out, because Hotarubi saves five, which would take off an additional sixth of Ridley's health.

And for Draygon, I think sparking through his middle causes more damage, resulting in a faster fight and less Supers needed (more to use aainst Ridley).

This run will be absolutely amazng when you finish it.

EDIT: as for my Ridley strat, start the fight with a charge beam shot, then pound him with Supers, making sure they all hit.  When you're out, switch to Charge Beam.  You'll have to count hits here.  2 charge beam shots = 3 Supers.  When you've hit Ridley with 30 Supers or their equivalent, lay a power bomb to force him to grab you (thanks, Kejardon, for that tip!).  He'll then die.

yeah i finished a run but im very sure it can be improved a lot

i used every trick i could except the horizontal spark before draygon because its kind of a hard trick and i find it akward to press start while running

as for the supers strat im gonna try that, as for the escape i need to ask

which is more efficient, maridia or brinstar route to mother brain??

Yeah, pressing start while running is kind of awkawrd.  Fortunately, though, you have the room transition to reposition your hands.  And seeing as how this is a segmented run with a save only just before the trick, and that spark saves somewhere between 15-20 seconds, when you do your final run, I think including it would be necessary.

As far as the route to Tourian, I remember we discussed this in another topic a little while ago.  I said that I thought going Maridia would be a bit faster than Brinstar, especially with that fancy-but-really-difficult shinespark I discovered to use in the big grapple beam room.

I eventually figured out that you have to jump up to the very lowest point on the thing of rock on the right, stand on the absolute leftmost part, shoot a missile straight up, spin jump right, then turn it around to left immediately, and spark just before you lose the missie.  Yeah, it's really hard.

Sorry, but unfortunately my emulator doesn't have slowdown, and I've only managed to do it on console, and only once at that.  It is ridiculously difficult.  If you can't get it, you'll probably be better off just sparking up to the platform below the door and climbing the next room normally

Sorry I couldn't be of more help here.

That might affect your ability to do it.  I hope my description was clear enough.

Azor, one question:  Do you have enouh money to mail the tapes once you've finished the run?  I remember you had some problems with that earlier.  If not, I wouldn't worry too much about it, because I'm sure there would be more than enough people (myself inclded) willing to send you money for shippng

im gonna also buy 3 or 4 more tapes so i dont risk losing one segment

I just did a bit of testing, and the spark back from Draygon's room takes 90 energy.  In other words, I think the only way you could do the spark to Draygon, spark Draygon, then spark back would be to grab the etank after Botwoon.  That etank takes about five seconds to grab.

Also, I developed a shinespark-only three round Draygon battle, which I think is what I might use in my run, because every Super I don't use on Draygon is one I can use on Ridley, and Ridley takes double damage from Supers.  The three-round strat has me taking about 180 damage.

i remember you saying you were gonna do a 100% run so saving supers might be a good idea as you wont get the 8 you get on the way to plasma

also i found a way to safely spark on the big room, i have to collect draygon's items and the fastest way i came up with is to boost from the turrets

if i need many health i boost from the lower one as it makes me collect more items

if i dont need that much i spark from the top one because it lands me near the space jump

edit: i still dont get it, i watched on high quality hotarubi's video and on the test run i did i played much better than him, faster boss fight and low or no small mistakes yet i get 33

ok maybe he played lower norfair better than me.

are you sure escaping through maridia is better?? because after watching how he escaped im tempted to believe that not even with the spark maridia is faster

i cant be sure though, i dont seem to have a sense of time

there must be something im missing, i doubt the saves make more than a minute of difference or the short charge i use because altough i can charge at the same spots as him mine is kina more tight and i need to be more precise

edit 2: apparently taking too much risks at draygon's fight is bad because i dont get to collect additional supers or PBs

Timing roughly, the ingame time of the Brinstar route as seen in Hotarubi's run, starting at the Maridia tube and ending at the statue room,  is approximately 1:11.  Note however, that there's two possible sparks Hotarubi doesn't do in this, which save combined I'm guessing 4 or 5 seconds.

Timing the Maridoa route from Smokey's 36 the same way and cutting out the refill/save at the ship is 58 seconds.  And Smokey obviously didn't use that shinespark I discovered.

conclusion: without saving at the ship, Maridia is faster (saving there takes something like 15 seconds).

I did test all 3 routes from Norfair to the statue for the upcoming any% TAS:

Through Maridia, through east Red-Brinstar and through west Green Brinstar (like Hotarubi did).

According to ingame time (not counting door transitions), the Maridia one is the fastest with around 5 sec over the east Red Brinstar and 6 seconds over west Green Brinstar. Of course playing pretty optimally for each route. But since west Green Brinstar is the most difficult one on console, its a very clear choice to pick Maridia anyway (well not for Hotarubi maybe, but for every "normal" player :P).

wow the route has really been changing with small great tricks

i wonder if i should make a topic for it??

Can't do a mockball there, unfortunately.  The best you could do would be to mockbll through the bomb blocks, then speedboost through that room and into the start of the green pirate room.

And I don't really see a reason to make a topic for the new route.  Everyone will see it when your run is released =)

(responding to your post over on gamefaqs)

I just did a quick test, and it looks like the post-Draygon spark only saves approximately eight seconds.  If it's making your route impossible, skipping it would probably be for the best.  But I really don't see how there's no energy refill between Draygon and the pirates.  The stack of worms in the room next to the plasma beam probably drops a couple large energy refills just because there's so many enemies there.  And there's several of Norfair's version of zoomers as you go down the elevator shaft, and they love to drop large energies and super missiles.  Plus, you're not going to be getting hit very much between there anyway.  There's the amage boost at the entranc and the kagoball, but that's all the damage you shoud really take, sure they both cause 50 damage, but one full etank by that point shouldn't be too hard to get (if you have to skip one of these, I'd say don't do the enemy boost, because it saves only like half a second).

wow this route is really getting perfect, i never thought so many modifications existed

as for now on my second test run im gonna skip spazer, im also gonna attack draygon with some supers mefore the first spark because it doesnt really matter which side i hit

currently kraids lair is getting hard, after killing him he dropped more supers than normal missiles which is bad because it wastes the supers of mini kraid
