turns out i've been playing the PAL rom this whole time... now i've found the NTSC one and it's like heaven... but from changing now i recognize some differences.
one is that the placement of enemies is different sometimes; in the long diagonal shaft in crateria that leads to the brinstar elevator, they are especially different.
also the physics of bomb jumping might be different. on PAL i could never horizontal bomb jump, period. on NTSC i was able to get over the wrecked ship moat in 10 minutes flat. maybe chalk that up to experience somehow but i doubt it...
the bomb torizo attacks much faster on NTSC, it's like he's on crack. but for some reason kraid rises up much slower, or maybe there's just more lag than on PAL.
the physics of shooting also seem to be a little bit different. going left from the landing site on PAL, you have to fire from a very early spot to open the door and run through without stopping. if you try that same spot on NTSC you'll never hit the door at all.
i'll post more differences when i notice them as i go through on another speedrun.
