Hi everybody! My first post here :)
I've been inlove with the game since i bought it in 94' ;)

Well, as i stumbled on a snes emu I started playing it again, i've seen some pretty damn nice stunts from people on the site!

So i thought I'd try some tricks, like theone where you get to the shipwreck without grappling.

I've watched the video 20 times at least and I've got some thoughts...

1. The distance I have to run to "charge up" is longer than in the videos from the 2002 site.

2. Once "charged up" I stay "charged up" much less time than in the video.

I still managed to launch a supermissile and charge to the right in the room separating the shipwreck... when I get the missile I see the supermissile in the exact same place as it is in the video, and I still smash into the door, as it hasn't opened completely once I'm reaching it. (I also smasg in the door when the supermissile is a bit further right than in the video, it just doesn't open fast enough)

So I wonder; Am I using a corrupt rom? Am I using a fucked up emulator? The gaming experience just isn't the same compared to the video on the 2002 site.

I've used the rom: "Super Metroid (E).smc"
size = 3,146,240 bytes

I've used the emulators:
snes9x 1.42
snes9x 1.43
Zsnes 1.42

Same result with them all :(

Does anyone have an explanation to this?
Or maybe some thoughts of what may be wrong?

I would really appreciate some input on this.

Best regards
//Anakha

C. Quick-charge Speed  (met.exploit.quick)
  Source: ???
  You Need: Speed Booster

Explanation: This glitch reduces the amount of room you need to charge up to full speed.

Where to do it: You can put this glitch to work for you anywhere you can run full speed.

How to do it: Instead of holding [dash] when you start walking, take a step or two first and
THEN hold [dash].  Samus will charge up quicker than normal.

Why it's useful: Certainly, anywhere you can gain invincible speed mode a second or so early
everywhere on Zebes is beneficial.  But there are a few places where this move is critical.
For one, it's a real easy way to trigger the Universal Graphic Glitch (met.graphic.uni).
For another, you can use it to build up speed jumps in places they'd otherwise be impossible.
The series of pillars just outside the Wrecked Ship, for example, usually takes about a
minute of low-angled jumps or grapping to get across.  Use this glitch, and you can pass it
  in seconds.

Why it works: I'm not exactly sure.  My best guess is that if Samus is already in motion
when she starts dashing, the game is tricked into thinking she's already started running.
Of course, since it's the same distance, this wouldn't explain it.  The simple fact is that
it DOES work, regardless of how, so feel free to abuse it.

Straight from the Glitch FAQ.

if the (E) in the name of your rom stands for european, you will need to find another version of the rom. the european version has version differences that probably hinder your ability to perform many of the tricks shown on this site. also, all speed runs shown at sda were recorded using the north american version of the game.

Ready and willing.
Any more version differences? Are they all related to the 5/6ths thing (which it seems like the shorter shinespark might be)?

evilchen is officially needed in this forum twice over.

though scarlet may know some off the top of her head, just from talking to evilchen etc.

Thanks for the replies Ziptnf and njahnke :)

That explains the first part, hopefully the version explains the second part... the door opens faster...

Is there any way to see the rom is the NA version? different size or maybe the header is different?

//Anakha

edit: I saw the PAL / NTSC info when loading the rom

I think one difference that I know of is in upper norfair.  When you first enter, and get past the first 2 heated rooms, you end up in a room with several small platforms, and rising lava.  If I'm going by Scarlet's 0:55 run, it's in segment 2, at the 13:50 mark.  In the NA version, the lava doesn't start rising right away, allowing her to roll underneath the platforms for a good while.  In the european version, the lava starts rising right away, hindering an attempt to roll underneath all of the platforms.

That is correct Purple Lizard, it starts right away.

By the way I now found some NTSC versions of the game but snes9x 1.43 report bad checksum on all of them :(
but they do load and seems to be playable...

i get bad checksum on my copy of the rom, too ... not sure what that means exactly.

i'll bet you kejardon could tell us, though.

Or...it could be just that he is timing it wrong...*shrugs* simple as that...fire super missile then a half a second later do the super dash...not at the same time...though you might have already heard that before...if you have...then trial and error is all I have to say...

Well, he said that the Super Missile is in the same place as in the vid when he grabs the missile pack, or even further to the right, so I don't think that's it.

He said...he has no way of knowing for sure unless he is a genious and can count frames and pixels and screens and all that jazz at a glance...but that's very much possible...or maybe I'm just stupid and I can't do it but other's can...which is also possible...

The only differences that come to my mind between the PAL and US version are the speed that blocks crumble is slower, letting you just roll to the early Supers, being able to pull off a spark charge in Draygon's room just by running, and PB66 is easily obtainable in a PAL No Boss/Mini Boss run.

Never really played the PAL rom though, so I don't know of any other ones.

Half a second?  Don't think it's that long:

Quote from Red Scarlet:
You have to hit jump + shoot at the same time, and then almost immediately after (but not at the same time), tap right on the d-pad. If the Super sticks out of the black box when you get the missile just like in the video, you got it.

Anywhere else to the left or right, and the Super will either go off the screen and you will smack the door, or you will smack the door while it is still opening.

I think I got it to work 1 time with the Super in a different position, but I can't remember where the position was.

That's possible in the US/J version as well.

Doesn't that require having a blob attached? Or that basically emu-only charge?

I mean the normal/quick charge way.

Is this the 11-block charge I've heard about?  I can't find the post, but I could swear Kejardon mentioned something like that.

You don't have to be a genious to see that ;)

I'll see if I can fit the pictures in here...

This is taken from scarlets video, a real masterpiece by the way :)
It's pretty small pic, but the important is the help lines i put there...

The same picture, blown up with 400%:

This is from emu, the PAL version

The supermissile is in my eyes clearly more to the right, it still opens the door but i still smash into it.

Ehum... well excuse me for showing what I meant, and who are you to define how a life should be spent ;)

If you have the urge to disrespect me, please do it in a private message and don't spam the thread...

Anyhow, I did the stunt in an NTSC version of the rom and yes it worked like a charm. Guess this will chalk up to another difference between the versions...

I leave the you are screwed...because that's the simple truth...oh and something I also failed to mention...is that I can't pull it off either...I tried once or twice...but I have never succeded...so I just gave up...I do two super dashes instead of just one...

Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
You can get a superjump charge in Draygon's room just by using a quick charge. It takes perfect timing though. You can easily do it with a short charge, too. In fact, in this case, it'd probably be easier to do a short charge instead of a quick charge. In PAL, however, it's easy to get a quick charge.

In general PAL is easier than NTSC, but a few tricks in NTSC don't work in PAL. The super-missile across the moat apparently doesn't work, and you also can't wall jump up from the energy recharge in Lower Norfair behind the Gold Torizo (very useful for a NBMB run)

In case nobody knows, a quick charge (walk three blocks, then press run) actually *decreases* the time it takes to get to blue-suit speed by up to 5 frames, so I decided to call it quick charge. The short charge (or maybe this should be called slow charge) instead cuts off a ton of distance by keeping Samus's speed down (although, it can also shave off up to 5 frames). If anyone can think of a better way to distinguish between the two, be my guest.

Hey Kej, have you found any feasible way to do the short charge on console yet?  Based on your description, it seems like it'd only be possible by playing through frame by frame and registering the run button only on certain frames.

I'm sure with practice, you could get the approximate times down, so it's feasible to get a decent short charge. But exact? I don't think anyone will be able to pull off a perfect short charge without cheating.
