Somehow, I remember a long time ago that this issue was brought up on the Gfaqs forums, and somebody actually gave an answer to it. But that was a very long time ago. I couldn't figure it out myself, so I figured I'd ask you guys.

Question: What exactly causes the dragons in Norfair to stop breathing fire? Is it a global variable? Does this global variable affect other random things in the game, such as boss attack patterns or enemy placement?

If this answer is uncovered, it could help a future TAS.

Annoying
I'm not exactly sure how the actual game works, but either the timer variable for the fireball attack simply dosn't activate sometimes, or perhaps there's a sprite limit for all the enemies and stuff in Norfair put together, and the fireballs simply exceed the limit, so thier simply not created. Just be happy that it happens.

I assume it depends on the second you enter the room on. I believe a similar RNG system is used to determine the distance Kraid chucks fingernails, and Ridley shoots fireballs (either right out in front of him, or as far back as the door you enter from). If you get Ridley shooting fireballs at the door, you're basically free to stand right in front of him, hold shoot, and rapidly hit left as fast as possible (double the fire-rate).
