my family is the typical one where only the sons play games. none of my parents ever had contact with a game before we started buying games about 15 years ago. gaming was nonexistant here even in the 80s.

i don't trust the local post office..

Metroid Prime-  A very good transition into 3d.  Turn off hint system and play it on hard...that's Metroid! 

Metroid Prime 2-  I did not like Dark/Light world gimick and the color palette was a drag but other than that Metroid Prime 2 is very solid and I like the difficulty!  Metroid should be hard. 

Metroid Prime 3-  Definetly has some visually cool areas like Skytown and Pirate Homeworld but the Halo beginning and the linearity was lame.  Controls are fantastic though and I love playing Metroid Prime with the new controls. 

Metroid-  Started it all.  It is the quintessential Metroid game and show waht a 2d should be like.  Metroid should be difficult and the player should need skills in platforming to progress in Metroid.  Playing this shows why they should make the game more dangerous and scary to the player. 

Metroid 2-  Scary!  The first Metroid I ever played and I was hooked.  Limitations of the GB gave it a pass on some things but it is due a retelling in 2d on Wii. 

Super Metroid-  Very good but too easy.  They should have made it more difficult to run through the environment but overall a very very good game.  It is basically a remake of Metroid and kinda shows what needs to be done with a Metroid 2 remake.  Super Metroid 2:)  Zero Mission doesn't need to exist because Super Metroid already did it and SM is a million times better the ZM. 

Fusion-  Garbage linearity mixed with a dumb story.  Traversing the levels was fun though but overall a very bad Metroid game. 

Other M-  Shame on you

Sorry, but the linearity completely ruined it for me.  It was not a bad game per say just a bad Metroid IMO.  Or should I say not really a Metroid game if they are telling you what to do the entire time.

The thing for me is Fusion was the first Metroid I had played since Super Metroid way back.  So I only had experience with Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid.  So while playing Fusion and hearing the computer saying go here, etc. was quite the shock.  I was saying WTF and it really pissed me off to the point of stopping(I did eventually finish).  So that's how I came to the conclusion.  Imagine it from my perspective coming from those three games and being used to finding everything myself.  That's a major reason I liked Metroid and they took it away and I was pissed about it.

But then I picked up Prime to try it.  Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.  Turn off hints though.

I might as well throw in my 2 cents since my opinions have changed greatly over the years:

1. Metroid 2 - So Metroidy that the other Metroid games wished they were even half as Metroidy as this. It's a very compelling experience from start to finish, though I'm too lazy to elaborate on precisely why. (Also, it has the best damage boosting system in any game ever.)

2. Metroid 4 - A very-good sci-fi thriller/horror game, with some well-done action. I really don't get the hate it gets. Also (this may seem odd, but) I really love the way Samus moves and animates in this game, particularly the walk-cycle (and it's accompanying *thunk* sounds). It all really exudes a real sense of physical presense.

3. Metroid 3 - Mechanically superior to 2 and 4, but the atmosphere is generally lost on me (except for Maridia). Also, the start and end of the game are rather weak (esp. on replays). Still it's a rather solid game, but also rather overrated.

4. Metroid 1 - I originally played through this game with a map at hand, so I used to think my fondness for it was because I didn't have to figure out where I was myself. However, after playing some ROM hacks I determined that exploring without a map is (can be) actually fun.

5. Zero Mission - I just don't like this game very much. Ignoring the schizophrenic design and structural problems (see: Chozodia), my least favorite part of it is that it brought the Zero Suit into the franchise. That alone makes the game deserving of punishment in the Sixth Circle of Gaming Hell.

I've played all the Prime games (sans Pinball), but never got around to completing any of them. The first-person perspective just makes my brain explode, so I'm withholding any real judgments on them. I might give them another chance some day.

And I haven't got around to buying/playing Other M yet.

There are some hacks (read: Eris) and games outside the series (eg Hero Core) that I think carry the spirit of Metroid as well as any of the best Metroids, but I decided not to include them in my rankings for some reason.

Now that I've played through Other M twice, I can update my ranking system. Some games got moved around a little once I put some more thought into how I feel about them, but the overall structure remains the same. This is based on how much fun I have with each game and overall how many pluses each one has over its minuses.

Super/Prime
Zero Mission
Fusion/Other M
Return of Samus/Corruption
Metroid/Echoes
Hunters

Super, Prime, and ZM are the top three for a lot of the reasons we've spoken of around here following Other M's release, but I have to mention that with my ranking system it's not that Metroid and Echoes are bad games (Hunters is the only "bad" Metroid game in my opinion, even though I still enjoy it to some degree.) it's just that they don't have as many things that make them stand out from the other games in the series in my mind. And Pinball doesn't count on this list because it's definitely not anything like the others.

I have no idea what you're talking about there. Trying to suggest that one of the others shouldn't be taken into account either? All I meant with my comment on Pinball is that it's hard to compare to the rest of the games because of how different the gameplay is. (Being a pinball game rather than an action/adventure game.)
