the "old people" theme is japan only so far. they could still market this differently in US/EU.
also, for those whining about buying another revision, you don't have to buy it. just look at the people who stuck with a DS Phat and didn't buy any of the redesigns.

I don't consider myself 'stuck', thank you very much. My DS acts like a DS should, and it even plays gameboy games. Wait, the DSi can't? Oh yea.

Like me for instance, although I'll soon break that once I get my backup in the next few months.
I was simply mirroring what others have said about those that DO get each new version. They're the ones that would be most upset with Nintendo right now, and if not them than any DSi owner interested in this one since one of the biggest complaints I've seen is the fact that DSiware games can't be transferred from system to system.

i don't see how you're interpreting the verb "to stick with" as having negative connotation. if anything, it sounds positive to me, eg: "people this days and their newfangled touch-controlled smartphones— i'll stick with my old flip phone; it works perfectly fine."

well, game boy advance at least. technology's gotta move on eventually though, so i have no problem with the new dses not supporting gba games.
As long as my current DS can continue to play GBA games and the system itself lasts for a good number of years beyond what it already has, I'm fine with that too. It's currently the only thing I have that can play them though since my Advanced randomly stopped working on me a few months back and I haven't replaced it. (Not that I need to right now/ever as long as the DS works.)
Granted, I am seeing that as a negative of the DSi at this exact moment since I want to make sure I can still play games like Zero Mission and Fusion for the foreseeable future.
You can still buy a DSi and use your old DS to play GBA games :v
I plan on keeping my old DS no matter what I get, because that would simply defeat the purpose of getting another one so I can do more with my Pokemon games. (Getting a new one and selling/getting rid of my current one would put me right back where I started with 120+ dollars down the drain) I'm still up in the air about whether a DSLite or DSi is what I am looking for, and at this point it's basically a matter of money VS the DSi exclusive capabilities. (Isn't there a 40 - 50 dollar difference between the two?)
I think that a bigger DSi will really widen Nintendo's audience. My dad can't play a DS very well, because he has trouble looking at the small screen. I imagine that this would be the case for alot of older people. I stuck with my DS phat, but I always wanted a DS lite, mainly 'cause of the brighter screen. I don't really have a need for a DSi, as my flash card does everything I could ever need.
So who here wound up getting an XL? How do you like it? I got one yesterday to replace my old Lite, which finally gave up the ghost.* So far I love the XL's screens, but the gameplay will take some adjusting to. I preferred the old button texture, and touchscreen-heavy games are a toss-up -- the bigger screen is great for precision, but sweeping movements take longer. To take Prime Hunters as an example, the XL's great for aiming but not for turning Samus around.
The weight difference is also pretty noticeable. I can't hold it for long with my little fingers against the base, as I do with the Lite, but it slips if my whole hands are underneath it. On the other hand, because it's so big, I don't feel silly resting it against my chest. I feel like it could use grip attachments of some kind, if not full-fledged wings like a controller.
But damn, those screens. I caught myself thinking "can't wait to try my GBA games on this" before I remembered. This'll probably be what pushes me to finally get a flash card so I can emulate. (I've been happy with my PSP homebrew till now, but the screen does not compare.)
Incidentally, I don't know if this was just my Microplay or the whole chain, but I got a free used game up to $30 with my XL. They're trying to clear out their DSis before the 3DS hits.
* Well, halfway. The bottom screen still works, so it's a functional GBA -- with solar shield for playing Boktai!
Nope, I went with a Lite in the end and am happy enough with that. Granted, haven't played it that much since I think the only new DS game I got in 2010 was HeartGold, but it's all I needed for what I wanted to do with a new DS system.
i got the DSiXL and it worked well for me. battery life on par with the DSlite and it is much more comfortable to play because of the bigger screens. the drawback is that games that require you to hold the device with 1 hand are quite tiring but i use the XL indoors usually and the DSlite on the go (i don't use the DSphat or DSi anymore). the different buttons take a bit to adjust but they're not too bad. i prefer them in some instances since they feel more tight. i really wish it had the GBA slot due to the extra space but i have a GBplayer for big-screen GBA games so it isn't a big issue.
