A must see for Metroid fans, don't miss it!

It beats the previous TAS-best time by 2 min! AVI will be available very soon.

Enjoy!

I normally don't care much about the TAS records (Seeing as how I play on the console), but since this is for Super I may have to check it out when/if I have time later tonight.

I mean, there is still the potential to learn something new or something better than how I do things, right?

Edit: I can't seem to access the link. Anyone else having problems with it?

Personally, I do not think getting Varia after getting Gravity makes any sense Rolling Eyes , since Gravity includes all the bonuses of Varia as well as water mobility and lava mobility, as well as even less damage inflicted. Not getting the Varia, but instead going back through the same door, could probably have shaven some time off, probably making it a 24 minute run. Some things I hate about speed runs:

1. Ceres Station, The waste of time this stage of the game is speaks for itself, and I know of at least one hack that doesnt even use Ceres Station.
2. Tourain Statue, the game takes forever to check for defeated bosses and kill their statue, then to sink the whole statue set.
3. Mother Brain's death after third phase of battle, so what if her head has to destruct seperately.

Great run \:D/  =D>

Sometimes the TASvideos server is down. Just try later in such cases.

Lawrence:
Varia is needed to survive the Brain Beam of Motherbrain. It would deal 6 tanks of damage without it (no matter if Gravity is on or not) those requiring you to get 3 more E-tanks instead.

The TAS was amazing.  By far the best parts were Lower Norfair and Maridia.  Also, I find it mind-boggling how quickly he made the TAS.  Wasn't it just less than a month ago that he started working on it?  Also, I feel obligated to mention the one MAJOR (for a TAS) mistake I saw: the missile lake before the Wrecked Ship.  He should have used the walljump method to cross there, since it's a good deal faster, and especially since I noticed and pointed this out after watching one of his WIPs.

Thank you very much BlueGlass, I am happy you enjoyed my run!

It took me 2-3 weeks to make this run, but that was just working on it 2 or 3 days per week. I am also the guy who made the 4 hour Chrono Trigger TAS within 6 days.

I had no idea it was possible to wall jump missle lake, can you explain how this is possible. Does it require the high jump boots?

I never tried the brain beam without Varia so I woouldnt know Embarassed . But who agrees with me about the wastes of time in the game.

Well, I feel rather stupid right now: Can't see the video because I don't have the program necessary to do so. (Being a console runner.) I read it wrong: Thought it was already in AVI format.

But once it is, I do plan on seeing it.

Hi-jump isn't required, and having it would probably make the jump impossible.  First of all, Samus has to be running at the right speed; conveniently enough for console players, that speed can be reached by having speed booster dequipped and standing right next to the door to the room before opening it.  In the room with the missiles, you must jump at the last possible moment before falling into the water.  The jump will take Samus just beyond the platform in the middle, grabbing the missiles on the way. Then, just release and press jump to walljump off the platform, and Samus will walljump without slowing down, allowing you to make it across the gap.  All credit for discovering the trick goes to Kejardon.

Hopefully that explanation was clear enough.

Yes that was very clear, and thank you very much.

It is a shame that I did not know about this earlier, but if and when I make a second run it shall be implemented.

Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
I did not discover that particular jump. <_<.
I did discover that walljumping off a wall in such a manner without losing speed was possible, but I wasn't the person who thought of using it to cross the missile lake. And the person who did cross the lake with it independantly found the walljump-without-speed-loss trick.
Can't remember who it was that found it though... >_<
I laughed a good bit when you were in the room after the hatchling Metroid... with 301 health. Random tidbit: If you land precisely on the center of Mother Brain's bombs when they explode, you take 0 damage (like getting hit by a Zebetite). Don't know if the beam charges during that time though... but that would've been great to do with 301 health anyways. XD
That last superjump: You should be able to start the super jump from a certain height to clear the platform, so you don't have to wait. You just need to vary the starting position. Standing start != crouching start.
It was fun to watch though. It's almost like a low percent run, except you have ice *and* speedbooster.

::edit:: Dang it, quit messing with my smilies! They are NOT html! ::/edit::

Welcome on M2K2, (Super Metroid) hero! :)

Damn, I didn't even notice the missing walljump part before WS. Embarassed
Probably because of fast forwarding through it accidentaly while watching, (couldn't wait to see WS itself). Sorry.

Thanks for mentioning it here BlueGlass. You are a vey helpful person in finding mistakes, that showed JXQs 100% run already.

But yeah, it would save around 2 sec as far as I know, and probably another 0,5-1 sec on the way back through this room. Still, I can't see a 24 min being reachable with this route, even with all this mistakes being fixed.

I believe 0:24 in-game is possible while still aiming exclusively for real-time.  I don't have 30 seconds of improvement in mind, but it is my gut feeling that it can be done.

Perhaps I'll eat those words someday.  :)

Indeed. All the recent console runs/WIPs have greatly benefitted from the techniques discovered by people like Michael Flatley, catnap222, Saturn and others (and by "greatly", I mean greatly). :)
Needless to say that I'm very pleased things turn out like that, since the best possible runs are the ones that look like TASes, and still aren't TASes. ;)

Also, I would have mentioned the walljump trick to hero, but somehow I was sure he was aware of it. >_>
Especially since Saturn's teasers had already shown that it was possible to use it in more places (namely Lower Norfair eye-door room) to save time back then. Well, dang. :|

As for the mistakes... Well, I'd estimate something like 10-12 (13 at most) seconds of improvement throughout the run, including all the walljumping and other general planning fixes, without drifting from its goals. It is indeed most likely impossible to be sub-25 with such a run, although an ingame-oriented one would definitely go under 25 minutes, probably even below 24 (especially with some optimizations popular in unassisted runs, such as HJ de-equipping and gravity jumping).

Anyways, that was a very fine run, and I was glad to help with what I could. Finally, the old and outdated run is obsoleted!

i have an idea...

since draygon is possible (and faster) with shinesparks...

wouldn't it be faster to, after the gravity suit, go straight through maridia through the backdoor?  then you could kill draygon, and collect the missing super missile pack on the way out, bomb the tube...kill kraid, and go to norfair.

then, instead of taking maridia to get back to crateria, you could take the green brinstar path...

this route may contradict itself.....but it's just a thought.

Wait...what the...? Did I just watch a Super Metroid speed run? Because all I saw was an yellow and then later purple blur moving around on the screen for 40 or so minutes.  Wink

But seriously, that was amazing. Many of those tricks were incredible. All the boosts in places that I had never seen boosts before, and the way you got by with hardly any items. Very nicely done, hero. (I'm downloading your Chrono Trigger run right now, also, as that seems like a fun watch as well)

And to ICheatAtGolf, do you mean bombing the tube from the outside? I have yet to see that, but it is possible, right? Using the green gate glitch to get there?

That is impossible, sadly. However, it would be about as fast to simply take the lower shortcut to Brinstar.

No, NOT Impossible.
I did it when my ISP Beam reset EVERYTHING. (not my current location or equipment though)
It CAN be broken from the outside.
...if you are talking about the Maridia Tube.
(Isn't that the only tube?)
It CAN be broken from the outside.

Without using ISP beam, it is impossible. And there is not a single reason to use ISP in that place in a speedrun since you can just go to the landing site and trigger the self-destruction sequence right away.

At least, on the console. Emulators are different
