Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
The game is saved before 'Game Saved' even comes on screen. And I think it's saved to RAM also. Try saving the game, getting killed, not continuing, then looking at the saved games. Is it there?
It's easy to solve this, since you just need to either get a screwdriver capable of getting out Nintendo's screws from the cartridge, or take it to a store and ask for your battery to get changed. In case you decide to do it yourself, it's a clock-sized battery, which you can find in almost any clock store.
I had a lot of trouble with losing SM saves, presumably also due to the battery. However, my situation was a bit different; the saves would be there for a while (several play sessions) and then the next time I turned on the game they were gone. I finally figured out that they were getting wiped when the console was hit/jiggled while it was on -- most notably when I tripped over the controller cord when my sister was playing. I think that was when one save got corrupted to 0 time, 0 equipment, and 0 health (so the death animation begins immediately on the Ceres elevator). As long as I make sure not to bump into it or wiggle the cart while the power is on it's been fine, though I've never tried overwriting and using the above save slot.

Nice. I bet that was fun trying to continue, always dieing. Woulda really sucked if you were almost done with the game. I had a copy of LOZALttP that had save problems, (Ganon was the last thing to kill before I beat the game) Started to play, Boom! Only, all my files were deleted. Made me sooo mad.
AND THEN GOD SAID: Let there be Memory Cards. (and there was!)
BTW: Anyone know where I can get a copy of Super Metroid? I've looked all over and I can't find a copy.
You can probably find one at a pawn shop. My local mall has a copy, so I might send it to you. Or, find a friend who has one, borrow it, and never return it. That's how I got Metroid Prime ! Lol.
