I have decided to do a reverse boss run/suitless cyborg run on ZSNES since Saturn seems to be taking a long time and I thought it would be a good idea for more than one person to be working on it. Please note that I have not been recording so far and will need to start over if I want to show you this run. I will put previews for my run on http://www.youtube.com/ so check there anytime you want. I just want to say that I am using tools to complete this run. I hope you guys like it. When I'm done I'll post my time on the best times topic. Anyway I gotta go work on it, bye!

First, why not Snes9x? You may experience desyncs with ZSNES.

Second, the lower Norfair and Maridia will require a lot of tool-assisted precision (which is something ZSNES in its current state isn't very good at) and ammo/energy management; are you sure you know everything it takes to do such a run?

All right, I'll tackle your questions 1 by 1:

Why not Snes9x?

Because Snes9x doesn't work on my computer. As far as I know, the only ones that will work on my Dell are ZSNES and Nestopia. I know, it sucks.

Actually, I kind of know what you mean. The slowdown isn't very slow actually; one room I had to rerecord at least 37 times. Actually, that room got skipped in the recording process because I forgot to turn the record button back on. I'ts nothing big, just the room with the beetles before the speed booster. But is the slowdown for Snes9x slower?

I'll be fine. I'm using the PAL ROM, so I should be able to get past Norfair and Maridia quite easily.

:D
For the most part, speedruns of that complexity have appr. 370 rerecords, if not more, for each room. I understand you're not striving for state-of-the-art precision, but 37 rerecords is nothing for a TAS.

You can adjust the speed manually in Snes9x, the same as in the latest versions of ZSNES (what version are you using, btw?).

What is more important is the frame advance function which works essentially as a pause button that advances the game exactly one frame forward when pressed, so you may take all the time you want to construct the movie frame by frame. Every controller button that was held at the moment of pressing the frame advance key is registered that way.
It takes about an hour to get fully used to, but then it becomes much more handy for any more or less complex part (all TASes are done with it nowadays). I personally find it handier to use frame advance than any slowdown larger than 20 FPS (but if I want precision, I use this function exclusively).

Bad idea, IMO.

Anyways, waiting for the run to be processed by YouTube.

*sighs* I've decided, finally, that I'm not going to do this speed run after all. It's just too frickin' hard with ZSNES. I had to start over after finding out I didn't have enough energy to get back to the bubble room after getting the Wave Beam. So I hope you enjoyed it while it lasted, however my video may never be uploaded (considering how long it's taking), so I guess you can't watch it. Sorry, guys. :(

I might try doing the run on Snes9x, though.

I just downloaded Snes9x and it works with my Super Metroid ROM. I can't adjust the configuration, though! All of the buttons say "Numpad 2" and it won't let me change it! What's going on?

And now I need to know how to slow it down. Help please? I'm new at Snes9x; I downloaded it less than 10 minutes ago.

You can see the keys at "Input -> Customize Hotkeys...". By default the keys are = (+) and -.

Also, the rules on this board are rather strict, so I strongly suggest you not to doublepost.

I don't see Customize Hotkeys. Is there another way? Am I doing something wrong? Does Hotkeys have another name?

The correct question would then be: are you using the right Snes9x version?

Yay, I see it now! Thanks for the link!

But how come when I use the frame advance button, the game crashes?

It doesn't crash, it pauses the game, then each time you press Frame Advance, it'll advance to the next frame, and if you hold any keys while pressing Frame Advance, they will register

I redid the first part of my speed run with Snes9x. The movie ends after the first missile tank, but I'll post it on Youtube and be assured there will be more to come!

You can view it here:

I'm looking forward to see your attempt.

The youtube links don't work though. You should check that your vids are no longer than 10 min (if they are, split them up) because youtube has 10 min limit for each video, unless you have a director account. So maybe crossing the 10 min limit is the reason your vids didn't appear there yet.

Is there another way I can let people see it?

One way is to post the smv's or avi's or you could upload to http://video.google.com/ or http://www.putfile.com/

How do you post the SMV? I uploaded to Google but my video isn't in the search results. You can search for "Super Metroid Speed Run Part I" on Google Video but I doubt you'll find it.

Use DeHackEd's very handy Microstorage to professionally upload smv files.

If you want to upload the avi (or generally any big files) you can use the free and very easy 1-click hoster http://rapidshare.com/ who allows sizes till 100 MB per file.

Or if you avi is too big, you could use http://www.updownloadserver.com/

Also it doesn't have the 30 day limit
