The Bomb that says it all .!..
I was wondering if this is commonly used among speed runners? I use this over Murder Beam as I just hate watching Mother Brain walk around on one leg. Also I was wondering if anyone was thinking of putting this up on the Super Metroid page as a Boss trick?

My name is 4N6/Forensics.
I use it because the murder beam is ugly. So yes it is used by speed runners. Its just a matter of preference one is no faster then the other unless you miss the 40 shots on Mother Brain. I'll write up an explanation of how its done but, I don't feel like making a video of it. I've just been lazy.

Would a ZSNES/Snes9x recording or a DVD recording from a console be better to send to the uploaders? I'm keen to make a video and contribute to the Metroid Knowledge base. (not that I discovered this glitch). When done properly this glitch kicks major ass!!!

Yea you can do it on the SNES9x if you like. Then convert it to a movie file.

Yea I love the Stand Up Glitch!!! I personally hate the Murder Beam.

I've never used Snes9x, is it easy to make the movies? and who would I send it to if I make it? I'll give it a try tonight.

You should really just do it the way you know how. Its no real difference.

Da hell wid you :)
It's where you can stand up and fight mother brain when your supposed to be stuck on the ground getting your health back from the Metroid. So you can actually deal damage during this part of the fight just like Murder beam can.

The problem with it though is as stated above, to be as fast you have to hit all beam shots. It's quite risky and mother brain battle as a whole is boring anyway to us speed runners. Sure it looks nicer but seems a bit risky for that late in a speed run. I've crashed the game many times with it by accident and I didn't even know why. Also Mother brain seems to need more shots after the metroid dies compared to murder beam usage. Maybe this is only PAL...

I've just made a smv on Snes9x. I was wondering what I should do with? (if anything)

You can actually use tbe metroid as a permanent energy refill, you can jump into mother brain an get damaged but the scene wont progress until your energy is full. This gives you more time to get your charge shots in.

The game will glitch up if the ice/wave/plasma is in the screen at the same time as the hyper beam.

I think that the video I've made better shows how the glitch works, but isn't as well executed as Saturn's.

Does anyone know who discovered this glitch?

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
As for the .smv, ask Ark or Nate what they'd prefer - the original .smv, or an .avi or whatever.

As for discovery, I doubt anybody is certain.  You may narrow it down, but you'll always find one who says otherwise.  Even on Saturn's video above, somebody claims to have done it back in the 90s. Think

In a speed run envirornment your still wasting time by damaging yourself just to get more shots in. Most effective thing you can do is not get damaged but also get every successul charge shot in. Then hopefully mother brain would be nearly dead.

Here's the SMV I made if anyone is interested in having a look.

Edit: Me being the fool that I am was wondering what the little red cross next to the attachment did. Now I know. (what a douche)

Servin' you realness!!
I still don't understand how you are able to stand up during that part of the fight.  I thought that Samus couldn't stand up once she has less than 3 ET's and has survived one round of rainbow beam.  What am I missing?

I think it has something to do with the game checking for the varia suit (can someone confirm this).

After mother brain does the last scream (scripting the end of the battle) and the varia suit (could be gravity as well) is off, all you have to do is mash the d-pad and jump and Samus stands up.

You also have to make sure that Samus is in the air when the metroid attacks mother brain, as well as being in the air when it is looking to heal Samus, other wise you will be stuck on the ground and I think the game will freeze. Other than that just go crazy trying to kill Mother Brain.

I sometimes have the suits off during the fight and I haven't noticed any change in my ability/inability to stand.  Haven't really checked though, to be honest.

The 'last scream' you speak of is the one right before she begins to charge what is supposed-to-be the final and lethal rainbow beam, no?

Yea you need to have at least 6 full energy tanks before the final scream (you can just intentionally damage yourself down to just over 6 ET's so that she only has to do the one and only scream) Do this and take Varia suit off. With the Varia suit off you take twice as much damage from the mother scream,(6 ET's). As you are on kneeling on the floor you should be able to get up as Mother brain attempts the death blow.

Do you only have to disable Varia, or is it Varia and Gravity?

Just Varia as that is the suit that halves damage. This tricks the game for some reason into thinking you can still get up and keep shooting Mother brain

So varia halves the damage so that 6 ETs will be lost instead of 3.  Does gravity halve the damage again, so that if you disabled both varia and gravity the rainbow beam would drain 12 tanks?  Just curious.

I'll write up a full explanation later as well as convert it and put it on my You-Tube page and give it to nate to put on the front page. I'll tell him the video was done by F-Bomb and the explanation was done by me.

No it's just Varia that halves damage. So if you took off just gravity you'd still only lose 3 ETs, iirc

Opium: It's just Varia.  FYI: This is why in the low% runs they get the Varia Suit even though Gravity protects you from the lava and stuff (you'd think it wasn't necessary).  Getting Varia (1%) is less than getting another three Energy Tanks (3%), and one or the other is required to survive MB's big beam.

You can read a little about this glitch on the TAS page.

Also when you jump to avoid getting stuck when the metroid comes in, make sure that you are jumping away from mother brain. If you do not you may very well get pulled into mother brains body and die. The same goes for when the metroid is looking to refill you.

I found this out the hard way while making the smv. d'oh!
