I just played Metroid 2 with drawing my own map on paper and just finished it. It was so awesome! I drew with the progression I made in the game and it almost felt like being on the planet and exploring the caves.

I can really recommend playing the game like this. It adds so much to the experience when you don't know what is coming! Of course this only works if you forgot most of the progression of the game (I played M2 ten years ago!).

For anyone interested I decided to photograph my map and upload it:

Anyone else did it with paper map? Thought I'd just share my experience :)

Servin' you realness!!
Here's the one that Damski made (I think) for comparison.

We started to make a map on graph paper of the original metroid back when it was new, but gave up.  Surprisingly, my friend's dad picked up where we left off and finished the map.  I wish I had it.

Of course it looks similar, it's the same game. I didn't play the game in order to make a map, I did it just for fun and for the exploring effects. Just wanted to share my experience when playing like this.

By the time I was able to play this game with any thoughts of speed running and sequence breaking in mind, I had been using a map. I never created one for either the NES Metroid or ROS because by the time I was playing them seriously maps were available to me so I'd just grab one from somewhere online and use that.

Every day is a happy day! :)
I use a map, but it doesn't tell me the events and obstacles, is really huge, and it is pretty fun figuring out how to get all the items, btw I am stumped on the Missle and Energy tanks with the room with invisible blocks.

Invisible blocks? What part of the game is that in? Are you referring to the ones in the ceilings or am I guessing wrong?

There are two vertical main shafts. When you fall down the left shaft, you fall onto a floor of bomb-blocks. On this level, to the right is also a bomb-block, with a morph-ball-height tunnel.

Lay a bomb, hold right, and go as far to the right as you can. There's a bomb-block right above, so bomb that and hold left in the air to land on the ledge. Then just jump up to get the energy tank.

Then go back down, bomb the right-most-block again, morph-ball left, bomb the block to the left, then bomb the blocks underneath. You'll fall to the bottom, where there's another bomb-block to your right. Bomb that, and then roll all the way to the right to pick up the missile tank.

As far as map making goes, when I was 10 I started making a map of the entire game on science-paper, block-by-block (as in, every single block you see on-screen). I eventually gave up on it once I started high school, but it was a monstrosity by then, complete with overlapping sheets due to the map not exactly being a true 2d map. Pretty sure I got it done all the way up to the omegas.
