Servin' you realness!!
I think it might be key to kinda not give a shit about finding 'acceptance' on your favorite gaming forum.  We have friends and other loved ones in our lives for that.  Don't get me wrong,  I can't really say my ego does not care at all about what most of the people in here think of me, but that desire is small enough that I can't actually get bent out of shape over things in here.

It's a free site and is definitely the best source for all things metroid.  Everyone is welcome in these forums as long as they follow some basic rules.  Just take it for what it is, because if you try to take it for what it ISN'T then you may become frustrated.  The same is true for all things really.

Quotin' for truth. Don't go out of your way to fit in here, just do your thing (within reason, of course) and you'll find your place. It's not something too worry much about.

wouldn't say they're not good enough; it's just that the "niche" isn't very receptive to new users. which is fine— it's an old niche from the early days of the site/forum.

i encourage users to get on irc and form their own niches! i think the hacks forum already has its own, which is great.

Also worth mention: if you want to fit into a "niche" you should probably bring something of substance to the table. Things like good grammar and competent posts go a long way towards success on the internet.

...success... on the internet. Uh, I don't really... huh. Did I just type that?

Mysteries are slowly becoming extinct.
When forum users are given too much freedom, we end up like the CoD Wii forums. (Yikes)

I am glad that there are rules and boundaries here, because I grew immediately tired of listening to little kids complain about every little detail in a game. Without our Moderators' maintenance, this forum would be trash, and not the kind you want to go dumpster-diving in.
This is a forum where a good laugh is bound to happen, and yet we can be serious at the same time.

I stopped coming here, but I was on here for many a year. It just stopped being fun on here when I had no metroid games to play and the social topic and boardwalk was boring because it didnt go very fast and #metroid was slow. It was fun trying to do the scan dash jump back in '04 with my brand new gamecube, but after a while i ditched the gamecube and metroid. It just never occured to me to check the forums anymore. I thought of it because seeing the preview for corruption and I remembered how cool speedrunning was.

But having my own FTP space via nate, and using a crappy old capture card to capture gamecube footage was fun, and trying to break out of rooms using SW tricks and frozen space pirates was a fun thing to do.

But this was one of the very first internet forums I went on, I never went to gamefaqs or anything mainstream, heck I ended up playing Jedi Academy with my friends. I just wanted to be part of a small community of people who liked a game I did.

Anyway, in regards to the whole "Metroid games aren't as breakable anymore" argument, I agree that games are definitely becoming more linear and restrictive lately. Just look at SSBB - Melee had all these tricks you could do, and rewarded you for practicing them by making you a better player, even if some of these tricks weren't intended (or were just not intended to be used as such). Brawl clearly and intentionally limited what you could do, in an attempt to keep people from playing it any other way than the "casual" way of playing (which is apparently what Masahiro Sakurai had in mind for Smash Bros from the beginning).

Nintendo is clearly limiting their games on purpose to appeal to the "casual" gamers that they've deverted all of their attention to lately, and it's seriously hurting communities like this one by depleting the amount of things to discover and discuss. Games should appeal to as many people as possible and give the player freedom - not try to confine them in a box of limitations and force them to play a "certain way".

I think Nintendo is appealing more to the casual gamers, because honestly no other console is. The PS3 costs way to much to be considered a casual console, and the 360 is closer but not all that casual.

They just see it as a way to make big cash, maybe when they release their new handheld or console they will start to appeal to the more hardcore group.

Oh good, now we can just say it's all your fault. >_>

Smash Bros is pretty much the worst possible example, as you sort of touched on, it was always a party game that was never intended to be taken a seriously as Melee ended up being. L-cancelling was the only "advanced technique" Brawl removed that wasn't, as far as I can tell, a glitch IIRC. And given that it was always aimed for a broad audience leaving all the crazy shit a few Melee players did in the game would make online hell for people who don't spend unnecessary amounts of time playing the game. In a game like street Fighter or something you could leave that stuff in since that's a naturally more complex game, Smash was always really simple fun for the sake of fun.

Also the casual crowd = money, even if it's just getting them to buy a Wii in the first place, Nintendo actually profits from each console sold, so they make all kinds of money off of lame casual games and potentially increase in their fanbase for the next generation. Nintendo's pretty much kicked everyone's ass from a business perspective and they've got, like, six games worth anything on their console.

This place is a little less serious than most forums, in my opinion. Most forums wouldn't let this shit fly. A certain EarthBound site is an example. Lots of mods there are... ugh. The moderators and administrators here are great.

Whatever. I was planning to post something, but I can't say any more that has already been said.

L-Cancelling isn't the only advanced technique that was not a glitch - contrary to popular belief, Wavedashing actually was intentionally left in the game (although not intended to be used as extensively as it is being used) as confirmed by Sakurai in an interview with Nintendo Power. Most of the techniques in Melee are not what I would call "glitches" tbh, but still exploits of the game's physics engine (wavedashing) or extremes of techniques that were intended to be simple (dashdancing, L-cancelling, etc.).

I honestly think that leaving those techniques in would have been the smart thing to do, because it would appeal to hardcore gamers as well as the intended casual audience. But yeah like you said it would make the Wi-Fi and online hell (as if the lag wasn't enough to do that already ;))

The Overlord of All Acorns.
leaving in "advanced techniques" (which they wouldn't have done anyways, because doesn't Brawl run on a different engine?) would have been fine if Nintendo got their shit together and made decent online play.  If there was actually a system that could match you with players of your capability.

Like in Metroid Prime Hunters?

iirc if you chose the option to fight against "rivals" I think that would put you in a match with only people with the same amount of stars as you.

yeah but it was my idea to put it all in a separate forum (because the super metroid forum was overflowing with nothing but talk about hacks).

But even if you did not get the idea some one else would so I don't see the big thing about it to be honest.

I know, I'm not like, bragging or anything, I just thought it was funny that my idea turned into all this XD

but yeah other people had been thinking the same thing at the time; I was just the one who spoke up about it.
