So, yeah, I'm really bad at starting threads, but since there were so many posts regarding the metal genre in the other topic, I thought a thread would be nice.

Maybe we can share bands, things like that.

I guess a good way to start off would be to post your favorite metal band, or maybe sub genre (since there's a shitton of them).

Okay so I'll go. In Flames is probably my favorite metal band, and I'd suggest it to anyone that likes any kind of metal. All their albums can be very different, ranging from really fast hard stuff to some really nice slow and calm stuff (eg: The Chosen Pessimist). SOAD is more of Hard Rock than metal, but some of their songs I'd consider metal. Opeth and Wintersun are also great. Opeth has some really calm slow parts in their songs. Nightwish is probably the most unique, since they do the whole medieval thing, and they do it very well. If anyone knows of any bands that are similar to nightwish lemme know.

don't listen to nearly as much metal as i used to but i enjoy in flames, mastodon, faith no more, ministry, judas priest, lamb of god, avenged sevenfold, megadeth, white zombie, slayer, soilwork, rob zombie, neurotica, panic, machine head. sometimes i can also get into metalcore like killswitch engage. also some great punk metal stuff like black flag and refused.

in flames and mastodon are probably my favorites of those ... i like melodic death metal a lot and mastodon's got an interesting sound although their singer can get on my nerves.

i also like power metal sometimes; there's some newer stuff like 3 inches of blood that can be p. cool. don't listen to it much though.
if you consider powerman 5000 metal, them too. tonight the stars revolt is one of my favorite records. nearly all their others are pretty shit though. :/

nightwish has some ok tracks but most of their shit is so overblown to ridiculousness. gimmick band is gimmicky.

hey mayne, they have some good stuff, mostly their older stuff I think. Their singer has a great growling/screaming voice, but when he talks normal he comes off as whiny (kinda like how weird Al is). Seize the day is a good example.

i only really like sounding the seventh trumpet and waking the fallen. their work after that is mostly god awful although city of evil has some decent tracks.

Sabbath as in Black Sabbath?  If so, then that plus Ministry is about the only bands on y'alls lists that I have even heard of.  I never would have called Ministry 'metal' - it's always been industrial in my circles, since they dont really play instruments and Al Jourgensen is a douchebag.  When I think of Metal, I think of Metallica, and they ARE the shit.
Besides, have you heard Ministry's old shit?

As we have a gaming forum here, maybe you should check out Machinae Supremacy.yll
It`s a swedish band. They are not making metal actually, but they are combining some elements from the great 8-bit era with punk/rock guitars. Check their webography! Lots of their songs are for free! And to be honest, the free stuff sounds much cooler than their albums... ;)

I actually was at a party in Austin TX and Al Jourgensen showed up.  He was just like people had described - a coked out dickhead.  He was hanging out with some totally skanky chick, too - probably his fruit-fly.

i don't typical listen to metal with vocals i can't possibly comprehend. deep-throated growling is lame.

Have you heard Opeth? They might change your mind. (They changed mine.)

qft, unless the song has a lot of really epic solos and what-not, I don't mind growling.

This, as well. Although I wouldn't say Opeth isn't completely not understandable (holy crap that's a lot of not's, you know what I mean though).

Da hell wid you :)
For me it depends entirely on how good the death metal band is whether you can listen to it without being put off by the growling. I've been listening to death metal for a number of years now and I think Nile and Morbid angel (one of the pioneering bands that started it all) are the best. Nile's old albums are sometimes so hard to get into because the vocals were completley incomprehensible and unrythmic. Their best album was annihilation of the wicked which is probabaly the most incredible record I've ever heard (at least for a death metal band).

With death metal it's all about the music, lyrics (growling) second. I think it just compliments the aggressiveness of the music.

Despite my name I think behemoth are ok. I like black sabbath. In fact I'm actually listening to the last Heaven and hell (formally black sabbath) album before Ronnie james dio past away (RIP).

I used to listen to bands like arch enemy and killswitch engage but after arch enemy released "Rise of the tyrant" (which I thought was shit, "doomsday machine" pissed all over it) I stopped listening to them.

I also like Strapping young lad and Devin townsend because it quenches my thirst if I want to here a bit of futuristic metal music with an insecure, mad scientist trying to "work shit out" as the vocalist (wtf!). Gojira are awesome too but I prefered "from mars to sirius" than "The way of all flesh". Lastly the new triptykon album slaaaaaaaaaayyys !

Maybe one more before this thread completely dies: Therion with inmho best line-up they ever had.
Guess some more info is useful: Therion is a swedish band and one of the first to combine metal with classical arrangements and instrumentation in the mid 90s. Sometime rather calm and quiet, sometimes more metal and sometimes with completely different guys on stage.

In Flames and Children of Bodom are probably my favorite modern metal bands.  As far as the older stuff: Metallica, Anthrax, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Van Halen (if you count that).

Back in Van Halen's heyday, they were called 'Heavy Metal', which seems to be something different than what people today call 'Metal'.

given the number of sub genres, basically everything is metal if you want it to be.

go hair metal.
