What is it?

Specifically, which (presumably few) items can you get and still complete the game? I seem to recall that the percentage is something like 14, but I don't remember which items are obtained.

Also, has such a run been completed/recorded/posted for public consumption?

*uses magic of gamefaqs, then skims threads here to make sure it's fairly up to date*

Yep. 14%.

You get:

    Morphing Ball  (1)Missiles        (1 or 2)Bombs          (1)Energy Tanks    (3)Charge Beam    (1)Super Missiles  (2 or 3)Varia Suit      (1)[Speed Boots OR Ice Beam] (1)Power Bombs    (1)Gravity Suit    (1)

Yep, that's Speed Boots OR Ice Beam. Two different paths. Also, the last item can be either a missle OR a super missle, in either 2/2 or 1/3.

I think the only low % SM runs are done on emulators.

*frowns* That would mean any recorded runs are on some obscure/dead site in a ZSNES movie file(s) that doesn't work or breaks fifteen seconds into it. Bleah.

Maybe if I can somehow acquire a cart I'll give it a try. Who knows, I may even set some kind of record. That or I will fail horribly on, I don't know, Phantoon. 'Cause lord knows I can beat him without getting hit.  Rolling Eyes

Maybe. But maybe #supermetroid has some around. I know they have a shell account on m2k2's irc channel... Scarlet might know more.

Well, I know at least one person who's working on a 14% run :P. Smokey did a 14% earlier I believe but he didn't bother posting it because it's for accomplishment and not speed.

I have no idea, Yoshi.  I stopped going there a number of months ago.

Bladegash or Xin would know..

Smokey's 14% Ice run can be found here:

http://www.geocities.com/smokeysmr/sm14_smokey.zip

It works on ZSNES version 1.36, with the US/Japan ROM.

There are only three/four recorded 15/14% movies that I know of, one by Kejardon (link to that one is in his FAQ), one by Smokey, and one by StRiFe (that was in progress and just slipped away from it all along with StRiFe himself...), and also the one that Ekard(s) mentioned (>_>).

You're a maniac if you attempt a 14%.  It's crazy.

Hmm... dropping about 20% off of my best record: Not happening any time soon...

I haven't even gotten close to that as you can see.

So there aren't any runs that are non-ZMV?

I wasn't aware anyone was insane enough to do it on the console.

Well, now that I have the correct version of the rom (I had the German version), I am viewing smokey's run. One question I have though, how old is this run? He fights Spore Spawn and doesn't use the Kraid quick kill. I'm thinking it's before those things were found...

lol. best description ever for my site.

and no, actually, I made that vid to present it as a normal walkthrough for anyone interested in doing one, just  to keep the viewer out of distractions. But now that I think of it, I don't remember if I knew how to do the KQK while doing that vid...

hope the vids are working fine and hope you like it.

Yes indeed, they worked just fine, and I am very impressed by the run as a whole. I know you probably weren't going for speed when doing it, but skipping Spore Spawn and doing the Kraid quick kill would, of course, lower the time by a bit. If you ever decide to try a 14% again, that is.

What's the difference? Console, emu, it still requires skill. No cheats were used (that I saw) in smokey's run, just some bug exploitation.

thanks, Mamba. I'll do a 14%/ice run for speed someday. What I would call tedious is doing a 14% run/speed booster path on the console. It's just by the sole fact that you'll only use that precise super jump to skip the zebetite in just one shot and if you miss it...

AND not to mention the slowness of the run when you get like halfway of the game. *shudders*

Crazy? Why thank you :) I've taken the Ice path, but Ridley is not cooperating so I'm stuck in Lower Norfair for now. I'll go watch Smokey's run sometime.

Save your missiles for the later part of the fight, when he becomes more aggressive.

So the next question is, has anyone completed and recorded a Speed Booster run?

No. Perhaps someday.

FWIW, a player by the name of Terimakasih has just submitted a 14% icebeam run to the Nesvideos site.

You can check out the submission here.  In-game completion time is 35 minutes.  (Do note that this is a tool-assisted run, so it took him on the order of 25,000 re-records in order to accomplish such a feat)

A very entertaining video for those of you interested in the low % runs.  This is representative of probably the fastest theoretical time that such a run could be done in.
