I'm not really sure if this is common knowledge. Myself, I found it by coincidence today.

You don't need the Ice Beam to finish the game. You don't need it to kill off the Metroids in Tourian!

"And", you say, "How?"

Simple. A Metroid can be killed by three Power Bombs. Boom, boom, boom, dead.

This means that, in theory, a low% run WITHOUT collecting the Ice Beam is possible. But, hey, I'm not mad enough to try. Any volunteers?

Very common knowledge.  Nice try.  Skipping the Ice Beam has been done since probably about 1994.

I never did like the Ice Beam very much.  So I should remember that when I go do a new run sometime.

The funny thing is, I've never, ever seen anyone do it or heard anyone say it's possible. I've never seen a non-Ice Beam run.

So I didn't know about it before. Well, whatever ^__^

It's not convenient for speed to skip any of the beams in Super, since your charge beam does more damage to bosses the more beams you have on.

And low percent Super games (15 or 14%) are extremely difficult and only the most hardcore players can do it. :)    (which, of course, means that I've never done it)

theres only one problem to that you will eventuly run out cause what if the metroid doesnt give you power bombs?

It's pretty hard to run out if you both a) draw all the Metroids within the vicinity together and b) have a good ammount of Power Bombs.

On 14/15% I think you just have 1 Power Bomb pickup, so you have to get all the Metroids in the room together, use the PB's to kill them, then go back to your ship for a refill for each room until you're locked in.

The two types of 14% runs (ice beam, speed booster, obviously the latter requires this trick)...

Both require the zebetite glitch, but thats not the point. You do need to get all of the metroids together and use it (as previously stated by Bulleta)

How do you do the Zeebetite glitch without Ice..?  Question

I don't think you actually need to freeze that rinka to get through.

As far as I know, you do, and you have to freeze it as it appears, because then the Zeebetite and Rinka are 'connected' and you can pass through it.

I've never tried it myself, but I believe I read somewhere you can also glitch through the Zebetite using the Blue Suit?

That... makes sense.

I've never tried it myself, the only major glitches in SM I've ever tried are the mockball, reset game and the blue suit. I almost managed to get into Norfair with the blue suit -without- collecting space jump, but sadly, there was one enemy that wouldn't cooperate...

Edit: I finally MADE it. Ridley dead. I have blue suit, no space jump, no screw attack (as if I'd need it...)

Huh. Well this is all news to me. Next time I play through the game I'm skipping over the beam then. 'Cause yeah, no one uses Ice beam anyway. Slows you down with the freezing and all.

It's sure as hell faster than waiting for three power bombs, though.

As for speeding through the Zebetites, I found this on the Maridian Depths:

"This glitch allows samus to bypass the first zebetite in mother brain's room if you have the blue suit when you get there. It's performed by getting under the block where you'd normally stand to shoot the zebetite, and then leaving no space between samus and the wall. From there, use the blue suit to diagonally super jump into the column (down to charge, then from standing position hold R/aim up and hit jump). Samus will become embedded into the column containing the zebetite. The difficult part is this: now you have to press jump, down, and left in that order very quickly. You only get one shot; if you mess it up there's no way of doing it again. If you do happen to get it, by luck or skill, you'll end up higher in the zebetite column and can simply jump+left to get out and past. Since they're all part of the same room actor, the last three zebetites will not activate because the first was never destroyed. This method is much harder than the ice method above."

That's true. But it would be fun to at least try. (which is what I'm doing right now :)  )

I noticed the thing with the power bombs as well, but was pretty certain people knew. As far as getting usefulness out of the tactic, there's not much.

If you skip the Ice Beam, through the combination of lessened damage with charge, the heightened difficulty in skipping the Zebetite,  and having to wait for power bombs, you lose time. The only practical application I could think of was in the horizontal room with 4 Metroids. It is slightly faster if you do it right to power bomb three times after gathering the metroids on you than freezing and killing 4 times, given you hit top speed while space jumping through the room.
