Simple question.  Is it possible to survive Tourian with the wave beam (ie no ice beam)?  I know the wave beam can repel the Metroids, but is it enough for you to survive and get to Mother Brain?

simply yes. but honeslty the best way is to use the screw attack to reflect off the metroids to get to the Mother Brain

all you need is enough missiles to beat the game. you don't need to use a beam at all, but using the ice beam makes it much easier getting around the metroids.

Thanks guys.  I figured it had to be possible since there are no metal doors that need to be unlocked, as in Super Metroid, by killing all metroids on the screen.  I've never seen a video of it being done, but I though it would be cool.  I wonder how much the wave beam damages the zebetites and mother brain, if any...

I doubt it does any damage to either of them. Pretty sure missiles are required.

Actually, all you technically NEED to collect is morph ball. As long as you beat both bosses to get 150 missiles, you should have enough to theoretically beat the game. I have no idea if anyone's actually done it in real time, though. Kraid's hard enough bombless. Ice Creamless is just insane.

A tool-assisted speedrun with only the Morph Ball. To show it's technically possible (need to watch it m'self, get an idea of how insane it'd be for a real-timin' hyoomin).  NOTE: totally cueing from Jagger

Just FYI, I made it to the zebetites and MB with the wave beam.  The wave beam simply passes through both objects, dealing no damage to either.

How difficult did that end up being to get there without ice?

The Metroids are very fast, and if you shoot missiles if they're attached, they bounce off their insides. You need 10 missiles to get through each of tourian's doors. It's approximately very, very, very tough.

Also, I don't think any beam hurts the zebetites or Mother Brain in the first place. O_o

Why not just make it even harder and not collect any beams?

Considering Ice Beam is really the only useful beam in Tourian (I've never actually tried other beams, but I'm not sure destroying rinkas is really as useful as avoiding them altogether), it probably doesn't matter there. I actually took Ice Beam as my second item in the 2-item game. Took me days to beat Kraid. >_<

I was very easy actually.  I simply played all the way up to the zebetites on the emulator with the ice beam.  Then I changed the upper nibble in offset $6878, Samusgear, to remove the ice beam and equip the wave beam.  Basically changed from 7Fh to BFh.  Thanks to metroid source code:

Oh that sounds like it's a lot easier than actually getting there icebeamless, like he's actually asking about. You didn't exactly "get there" iceless as you claimed to, you got there and then used a code to REMOVE ice cream. -_-

All true statements, I do not deny that.  My goal in that little test wasn't to see if I could make it there legitimately.  After thinking about it more and reading the comments here, I bet it could be done with re-record, frame advance, and screw attack.  After coming to peace with that realization, my goal then became to see simply if the wave beam even hurt the zebetites or MB.  The end result shows that it doesn't.

I think someone on the gamefaqs message board mentioned this, and I would have to agree with them.  The game designers probably should have switched the positions of the wave beam and screw attack in the game, thus making the wave beam easier to get, and the screw attack more difficult.  That way, you could easily grab the wave beam on the way to see Ridley, where it's actually kinda useful.  And maybe even hold onto it for Kraid as well.  As it is now, the wave beam just isn't attractive to go all the way down and get.  The screw attack (most powerful item in the game) makes better sense placed in the most remote place.  Basically, the wave beam is a lot of work for not much result.

Ah, okay, nevermind me then. But yeah, re-record and frame advance alone should make going through there doable fairly easily. I might be able to do it using just morph and bombs, but there's no point because 2 items is 2 items. I already did it grabbing ice cream, so if I felt like challenging myself even more, I might just go all out and only grab morph ball. Kraid alone is probably the hardest part of the game if you have ice beam, but the Metroids are likely just that much harder if you don't. Save states might be a minimum human requirement, I'm not sure.
I've tried with the regualr NES game and its impossible.  I am 34 and have played since I was a kid- don't know about all these sims and crap you guys atalk about, just the original game with no cheats or emulators or whatever-  Farthest I can get to with the wave beam is the door after all of the rinkas..the second to last door before entering Mother Brain's room..the Wave Beam shreds the rinkas nicely..and doesn't seem to do squat to the Mets..
