In the room with the energy tank and the sand pits, the one right before the pretty-much-vertical room with grappling blocks on the right and left sides and the metroid-like things, I was able to get a blue suit accidentally.

What happened was, I came in the room and did a quick charge from the right door, and as I ran across the first sand pit, I hit all the enemies at blue suit speed simultaneously, and for some reason Samus stopped and started sinking in the sand pit--when I jumped out she had a blue suit.

I haven't been able to repeat it, but I think it has something to do with how the enemies are coming out of the pit at a certain time, or the possibility that I froze an enemy at a perfect time to get stuck at blue suit speed, but not get hit. That would explain how I sunk into the sand.

I'm sure Kejardon has an explanation.

It's probably the same sort of system with Draygon, where Samus still counts as running, but is stopped by something (the sand in this case), and is given a permanent Blue Suit. This way seems to make getting the Blue Suit easier though. Nice Find.

Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
If you're sinking in the sand, you lose the real blue suit, but you might keep the blue color. It's been done many times before.

That must suck pretty bad. Why does the colour stay?

I don't know. I could hunt around and find what calls the routine to set Samus's suit to normal colors and why it isn't called in this case, but I'm not much motivated to do it.
