There's a turtle-creature sprite I've often seen labeled as "unused". But today I was playing through Maridia for the first time*, and I found it! It wasn't particularly difficult to get to (there's just a hidden passage at the bottom of a pit containing a pink Pirate), so I assume people know about it already... do they? It's in a tall room with a bunch of little mini-turtles, and it spins around in its shell to attack you; if you jump on it, it flies upwards, allowing you to get an energy tank (though walljump works just as well). I've watched a lot of SM speedruns, and I've never seen this room before in a 100% run.

I play SM on the Virtual Console, so maybe they edited the room in for VC?.. doesn't seem likely though. Unrelatedly, I wish I had a real SNES. :'(

No, it was there in the original game.  Same for the room.  :)  But seeing as it's only used in one room in the game, I can see why you'd think it was an unused one.

yeah, you don't see the turtle in 100% runs because they move through there so quickly. it surprised me the first time i played through sm too.

Only these sprites are unused:

Is there a sprite for a mini crocmire... The other one looks like it could be for the bubblerooms in norfair just another color.

Huh?  What about reflectors?

Yeah, don't forget the reflectors.  They weren't used either.

Actually, Jathys explained the other day what the blue sprite does.  Apparently it absorbs other enemies or something and can become more powerful that way.  However, the code is only partially implemented so it's pretty unusable.

Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
The blue sprite (called Bang) absorbs whatever you hit it with, and after around 3 hits sends it back at Samus as a charged beam.
Emphasis on whatever. You can hit a Bang with speed jump echoes. Doing so will make the beam slaughter Samus.
You can also hit a Bang with another Bang's shot. Do it enough and you can overflow the damage counter and make a beam that heals Samus.

I had a lot of fun in that one hacked room.

LOL.

That sounds kind of like it wouldn't fit into the game very well, although that's easy to say since it wasn't in the game.

Are you ready for some underwear music?

That right one reminds me about those energy sucking enemies from Metroid Fusion.

I'm assuming he's referring to those things in sector 1 that look like Bangs and drain your health.

I usually kill those things as I run past them, so I never noticed that they drain your health.

Besides Stokes, Reflectors and the Bangs, there's also some unused graphics of some small Piranha-ish creatures in Mother Brain's graphics page in the ROM.
And yeah, that's definitely used. Makes me wonder why he was only in one room, though.. He was your helper, yet he doesn't participate in the sequence where you save the critters from Zebes going boom.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
He wasn't really your helper. If you don't stand on top of him, he continually moves back and forth along the bottom and hits you for a rather large chunk of health.

Sorry about that then.. I could've sworn he helped you to reach a Missile Pack in that hight tunnel but not harm you.
