Well of course you can do it anyway at least in long corridors. But someone said that hotarubi (who used armpump very fast) saved not more then ~3 seconds arm pumping. And if you try to do it as fast as you can it makes everything else harder, so I say that it's not a necessary trick.

There are certain situations where arm pumping saves more time due to to some other circumstances. A good example is entering the room with ki-hunters in Kraid's lair: if you just run forward, the first ki-hunter will attack you and you'll get thrown backward. However, if you boost your speed with intense pumping before the attack, you'll get thrown forward, thus saving up to a second in that place alone.

Flat mockball won't help in that room since you have to shoot a block in the floor, which combined with the time needed to morph and unmorph is going to take longer than evading the attack some other way (crouching, for example).
