Adventure, Platformer and Shooter are all high rated for me due to my experience with the Metroid series, especially Metroid Prime Hunters. Platformer/Adventure is also high rated due to my liking of games such as Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Sunshine and Sonic Rush games. RPG is mainly representing my love for the Mario and Luigi RPG series, which is only second to the Metroid series. The puzzle genre is solely being held up by Tetris DS and Meteos. To be honest, everything else was a hard decision.

Totally forgot about games like Gears of War in all of that. Out of any of the ones we've listed so far, that probably comes the closest to what I'd think of outside of an FPS as far as shooter is concerned.

FPS definitely deserves its own category in my mind, along with shmups. On-rails and third person, however, I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not the generic shooter category works. Given that you don't want to specialize every type of gameplay out there, and that other categories like RPG, Sports, and Arcade are so vague right now, it would probably work if you had those three categories at most.

I don't know: My mind is getting twisted around with all of this to the point where I can't think straight at the moment.

I think of "arcade" as anything you would find at an arcade.  An arcade machine.

Clearly we need more platform and adventure games.

Clearly we don't need more sports games. Razz

The vertical lines represent tier boundaries. The order of genres within each tier is pretty much interchangeable for me, though I'd say the actual order is pretty accurate.

As a list of gaming super-genres, it's pretty good. Most of the problems with it stem from the decline and creation of various genres mucking up common definitions. That, and the usage of the word "arcade" as a genre descriptor has become rather uncommon.

I've never had the patience to learn how to properly play fighters. Smash Bros is an exception, but that's because it's also a platformer at the same time, and it's moveset doesn't require an arcade stick and memorization of umpteen trillion button combinations (and it has all my favorite characters :P ).

That's the thing that the rankings don't show with me: I love games in general, but I just love some games more than others. It's not that I dislike fighting or any other genre, but there are far more Adventure/Platforming/Strategy etc games that I love than there are fighting games. That was how I tried to base my votes for the most part.

Sonic, Sonic Boom!
I just ranked mine according to what I'd like to play most.  I assumed that I was able to play one fantastic game from each category, and placed them in the order I'd go through them.

I also enjoy fighting games, but I just haven't enjoyed one properly since Street Fighter Alpha 3, and before that Hyper Fighting.  I'm not a fan of the wait-for-a-mistake-and-then-take-off-half-of-your-opponent's-health games that have appeared since then.

Lastly, I noticed the colours arkarian chose are subliminally coded.  Six pink / purple / red ones, and one of each of the others.  What are you tryin' to pull, eh? winky

I don't play fighting games to the point of having a decent arsenal of combos memorised for each character, I only play casually for fun, and boy are they fun.

I'm all out of coal.
I thought about maybe adding in Party Games for games that are great hits for parties, including rock band, mario party, and smash bros, but do you think Mario Party should go in the same category as Rock Band? :^/ It sort of doesn't fit. But then there's like, excercise games these days. Does Sports Resort belong in the same category as DDR? Maybe, maybe not.

if i ever add more, next would be:

rhythm/music
fps
action
party
simulation

again, the only thing stopping me is the lack of icons. if anyone can make some in the same style as the current ones, go for it and i'll put them up.

Metroids and Mother 3 are my favorite games. Then, good ol' Mario's jump in.
Mario Kart Wii is awesome, even though i don't own it. (yet)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is awesome too Very Happy
Puzzles are nice, though some puzzle-games suck.
Strategy games, such as Tower Defence, are good ones to spend time.
Sport games aren't my thing.
IMO arcades suck, except some of them, like PacMan
Shooters aren't very good games, except Call of Duty's and Far Cry

Platformers and adventure games are easily the best (and a lot of my favorite games happen to be adventure-platformers). After that it's a little harder, shooters RPG's and strategy games are all pretty close to each other, but going after the amount of games in each genre that are really prominent for me, that is how it ends up. I like fighting games a lot as, but I've never loved one enough to get really invested in it, and more or less the same goes for arcade games. Some puzzel games can be fun at times, but generally only for shorter time periods. And I really don't care much at all for 95% of all sport and racing games out there.
