Both you and the friend need to be logged into Nintendo WFC at the same time in order for it to show up.

In order for that to go away, both players need to be online at the same time. You don't have to play a game with eachother, but you need to both be connected to WiFi Connection at the same time.

Actually, I think that's not true. I believe you can do the following:

I'm just telling you what the manual and the WiFi connection website say. They both say both players must be connected to wifi connection at the same time. They dont have to play a game, they dont even have to be on the same mode but they both have to be online at the same time (for even a second)
