My favorite part:
Code:
Power Ball: If you run with the Speed Booster and jump (not fly) diagonally,
then crouch in mid air, then turn into a ball just before you hit the
ground, you'll turn into a ball that can destroy certain rocks.
Unfortunately, this requires a lot of open space, since the jump has to
be pretty wide and you have to hit level ground (as opposed to a wall).
The timing is also very critical; I was only able to do it by slowing the
game down externally. Using this method, you can clear out just the bottom
row of blocks near your ship. Practical use: none that I know of. (It's
   a bug, not a feature! :-) )

Yeah, mockballing doesn't technically count as Master Balling. I can't think of very many places you can mockball that require speedboosting at the same time.

Once in lower Norfair, twice in Brinstar (green/blue) if your name is Satoru Suzuki, and maybe one more time in pink Brinstar (though I can't say how useful it is).

You do realise that other people besides Hotarubi are capable of doing such hardcore speedtricks, right?

Of course I don't, why would I?

Yeah well I'm just slightly tired of seeing all people speaking about how he could execute all the tricks in SS run. He missed some too and isn't the only one that can do those, but he has a very consistant gameplay with fast overall speed with his tricks to make it faster. Many other people can do the same tricks.  Rolling Eyes

Well it's obvious that Hotarubi is the one to compare against, since of all people who are able to do all these tricks now, he was the only one who got a grip of himself and produced a coherent run that is the current standard back then. I also can do some advanced tricks now, and many people can -- it's just that he was there first, set a world record and got famous thanks to that. No need to get offended.

I didn't get offended, I was just confused about everyone always speaking about Hotarubi. It's still obvious as you said that he's being discussed, 32 min SS isn't child's play, but it's sure brokable. As a matter of fact, I think he's good enough to get 29 with segments. I think so, but am not sure.

In his own way he kinda set the new standards for SS speedruns for Super Metroid. You could say it this way I guess.

The more I run this game, the more I notice Hotarubi's mistakes.  But, at the same time, the more I run it the more impressed I am with his ability.  It's not just the tricks he is able to pull off; it's the sheer accuracy with which he executes things.  When he makes mistakes it's usually because he was aiming for close to frame precision.  He thoroughly memorized each room, even down to the individual sections of each room during which he should and shouldn't shoulder-pump and the order in which he should walljump off platforms.  His damage boosts are well-planned and crazy, and I'm still working on emulating them.  Until I see an SS run that demonstrates the kind of attention and precision that Hotarubi's run has, his will always be the run to beat.

(BTW the "fast overall speed" is what impresses me most about his run.  If you compare his run to Smokey's he usually saves about 15 seconds per elevator area, solely because of the "fast overall speed."  And so, overall, the run is much faster!)

I am extremely jealous of those that don't need to memorize each detail of every room in their path to get a really good time. I fail thousands of times just to be in sight of the masters. >_<

You mean like that down going room in Green Brinstar with sidehoppers? ;) That's the most common place discussed when talking about speedtricks in this run I think, and why not talk about it. The room seemed like it couldnt've been done more perfect. Smooth mockball from the door, enemy boost to that "pillar" and quickly to the second room, 3 phases you have to learn and it's there. Now every room has some kind of madness like this, I use them in my runs too but certainly can't succeed in as many of them as Hotarubi could. :P

And apart from Phantoon, I can't actually think of any boss fight that would've went, well, bad. I suddenly feel like playing a SS run, maybe I should get to it. :)

Actually, I've practiced that trick so many times it seems relatively doable to me.  Certainly in the hands of a master like Hotarubi it should be doable every time.  Damage boosts get much easier with practice.  It's still incredible though.

I was actually thinking of when he starts and stops shoulder-pumping, as I said.  Look closely at what he's doing, and he will stop even during short ledges and then resume it; but he'll keep doing it even on tiny ledges where it couldn't possibly save him more than 2 frames or so. It's this attention to detail that makes his run so incredible.
