If you Don't know where I am talking about it is the long vertical shaft on the farthest right of Kraid's hideout. I always had difficulty in getting up this shaft until I discovered a simple trick to it:

Items required:
Wave beam (and preferably high jump boots but they are not required.)

How to do it:
Stand on a floating block nearest to the bottom of the vertical chain of shot blocks. Jump up and shoot a few times to remove a few of the blocks. Move to the furthest left of the block (so your standing half way off.) jump up and shoot a few times. Repeat this process and even if the blocks respawn on you, you won't fall down the shaft.

Are you sure that beam's required? If you don't get pushed off, I imagine it's because of your positioning and the direction you're facing rather than your beam.

The beam isn't required to stay on, but it removes more blocks quicker so getting up is alot faster.

I thought that was how most peeps got up that shaft?    It's not the fastest way to get up the shaft but it is pretty obvious.

I always heard that people struggled with this shaft so I thought I should post this. And what is the faster alternative?

Probably the really unreliable method of jumping in reverse out of the column and shooting your next step out before you start to fall.

It's faster to jump up, shoot out 2-3 blocks and land in the gap, then jump onto one of the gray squares, then repeat.  that way you never have to wait for blocks to respawn.

Suicide is the best way to exit the lair after beating Kraid imho.

IMO if you have ice beam and hello-jump you can lure the fly at Kraid's moat into the tunnel above. Then shoot the block out above and bomb hop out. Harder, but funner.

I hate going up the shaft. After I beat kraid I kill myself. It makes it easier.

Let's hope you have an energy tank to reach after that. Starting at 30 health is a hassle.

Knowing how to get up the shaft is still important, though.  Opinions differ on whether "save warping" is cheating; SDA seems to treat it as a separate category.  I for one consider it cheap, if nothing else.

I think save warping just means it's not a SS, no?

I believe it no longer makes the run a SS.

That's what the rules seem to say.  But the Zelda II runs, all of which use Up+A save warping, aren't broken into segments.  They're listed as neither SS nor "in X segments", and there's no indication that the slight time penalty for segmenting was applied.  So in practice it seems to be a category of its own.

Technically a player can use it in a single runthrough. Segmented runs imply that they do the best at each segment they can before moving on to the next. If they do it all in a single runthrough, it's not really technically segmented. They're just using it to leave the game realm and return at a different spot, skipping major portions.

Another, probably insignificant question is if someone uses a digital camera to take a picture of the pass code and then copy that code in the Continue screen, does that count as Tool Assistance? I guess it's irrelevant if they use a version that saves the latest pass received, though.

Time bomb set get out fast!
While we're on the topic of Kraid's block shaft, it's been known for a while that if you shoot too many too fast, you sometimes take damage for no reason.  (You can see it in Dragondarch's 100% run.)  Do we know yet why this happens?  The mysterious hit looks like the hit you take when a block reappears on top of you, so I wonder if it's an earlier block reappearing and somehow hitting you... but that wouldn't explain why it doesn't happen if you go slowly.

As for your question, Jagger, I think the term "tool-assisted" would lose all meaning if we applied it to that.  The same reasoning would make it illegal to refer to notes about your route as you go.  (And for the record, any version of Metroid will continue immediately if you press Start on the password screen.)

I still say save-warping is not a SS.  You are reloading a save that just so happens to take you to the beginning of an area, but the point is you are ending the game and starting it again.

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I usually take Single Segment to mean that the player does not lose control at any time other than in cutscenes.
