I decided to go back and polish up my gameplay skills, and was practicing horizontal bomb jumping, and realized there's an easier way to horizontal bomb jump. It's similar to one-wall underwater wall jumping.

It's still difficult, obviously, but now it's not much harder than double bomb jumping.

Start bomb jumping as normal. You don't have to worry about hovering, although if you can hover comfortably you should. When you're ready to switch to horizontal bomb jumping, move forward a bit, then turn around so Samus is facing the bomb.
When the bomb explodes, lay another bomb as normal, and hold forward (away from the bomb) until the peak of Samus's jump. She'll suddenly swing back hard, THEN hold back (towards the bomb). You should be able to reach it very easily.
It's a bit counter-intuitive, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. It allows much more room for error than the hover-requiring horizontal bomb jump.

It's a sort of bug abusing the game's momentum. The game uses relative momentum ('forward' and 'backward'), not absolute ('left' and 'right'), so if you turn around you'll switch the direction of momentum.

Hmm...perhaps you could provide a ZMV?

reminds me of spike jumping. very cool. if i don't remember to put this up in the next site update, kill me. and yeah, a zmv would be great so the page can have a vid.

Apparently Smokey already knew about this. <_< Maybe I should watch speedruns more carefully... (did he use this in his low-percent?)

Ah well. Kinda out of it lately, I haven't been able to pull it off the last few days reliably without using slowdown. I'll try and record it when I'm feeling better (and my computer isn't lagging... >_>).

He used a horizontal bomb jump in his 14 % run to get to wrecked ship without Grapple/Speed Booster but I'm not sure if he used the mentioned technique for it. Anyway it was the first horizontal bomb-jumping I have ever seen in a movie and I was just shocked about his skills at this point because I have never dreamed of such insane thing to be possible at this time (it was almost 3 years ago). At least now my success rate is about 1 of 20 trys :-).

I'm looking forward to see a zmv or whatever of this trick anyway, so I hope you can manage to record one soon.

I remember trying to Bomb jump over the moat without getting the Missile tank..
Never succeeded.
Horizontal Bomb Jumping is a meanie indeed.

Ack! Been sidetracked programming, and I haven't touched this since then.
I'll do this as soon as I finish some stuff I'm working on right now, assuming I remember.

Ugh. Too late today, that took a lot longer than I expected.
Glad you like the gif, it took me a long time to make. Mainly because I had never made an animated gif before. :P
Finally got it working and optimized enough to fit here thanks to GIMP.

P.JBoy, I got the individual frames straight from a ZMV using ZSNES's frame advance+screenshot feature. I cheated a bit with the looping, since the enemies don't respawn that fast when they drop a powerup, but that move is entirely legit.
ZMV starts out without a powerup, Samus goes right, lays a bomb. GIF cuts in after bomb is laid. Goes on to where Samus rolls to the left and lands, this is where the GIF starts. Samus morphs to a ball and rolls right, the GIF loops back shortly after picking up the energy, and the ZMV ends soon after.

I suspected that was how you did it.  GIMP's gif optimization is choice.

No I don't think he is, cause I think he asks about where's frame advance in ZSNES. Frame advance is not in some versions of ZSNES, so maybe that's why. ZSNES is not used for TAS, sometimes some say that the savestates are screwed up, and all that...

Press F1 during gameplay. :P It's been there as long as I can remember.
Not practical for playing the game, because you can't really input new buttons. But great for taking snapshots of a zmv. Unfortunately, it advances around 3 frames at a time, so you'll miss a lot (which is why Samus only flashed once or twice in my gif)

::edit:: whoops, accidently double posted. Deleted and edited.

k, got a decent zmv done.
http://www.metroid2002.com/kejardon/EasierHBJ.zip

The first half is using this HBJ to bomb jump across the infamous missile lake. The second half is me trying to show what I'm doing by doing the same thing demorphed, but Samus moves really fast on the ground as a ball, so it took me a minute to get used to that and actually place Samus correctly. I get it right 4 times in a row at the end of the movie, though.

Let me see if I can explain this better...

Bomb jump as normal, then to start the HBJ, move forward a bit, then turn around to face the bomb.
Lay a new bomb when the old bomb explodes, then immediately hold forward (away from the bomb) until the peak of Samus's bomb jump. She'll boomerang around at the height of the jump, at this point move back to the bomb and be ready for the next bomb jump.
Meh. It's kinda something you have to see to understand.

Great find...i was messing around in gauntlet TAS style and used this along with some well placed diagonal bombs to make it (almost) all the way through without touching the ground.  i'll probably do this again in the SM: Impossible TAS i'm doing.
