For years, I've been playing the game with the following setup.

Run: L
Aim Up: R
Item Select: Y
Item Cancel: X
Shoot: B
Jump: A

Now, however, I'd like to actually map Aim Down to something, for the arm pumping if nothing else.  But doing so gives me this:

Aim Up: R
Aim Down: L
Run: X
Jump: A
Shoot: B
Item Select: Y
Item Cancel: ... select?

I'm trying to resort to the claw to hit run constantly, but how do I hit item cancel now?  I mean, if I could hit it during room transitions I'd grin and bear it, but I can't move my left thumb to cancel and halt forward movement, and just cycling through the items with select isn't good enough.  To anyone who has a good time: how do you do it?

Servin' you realness!!
I have a gamepad that has 2 L R buttons, and have it setup as so:

Aim up:    L1
Aim down:  R1
Run:        L2
Turbo fire: R2
A:          Fire
B:          Jump
X:          Item Select
Y:          Item Cancel
Start:      menu
Select:    Fast Forward (I press it for a second every time I go through a door or pick up an item, I also hold it down during the mother brain fight and during that part in the hall right before spring ball)

No doubt you recognize how awesome it is to have 'Run' assigned to a shoulder button, as this makes it easy to hold it down for pretty much the whole game.  It would totally suck to have to sacrifice 'aim down' though.  I realize that you can aim diagonally down without it, but not without also moving forward.  It also makes it impossible for you to aim straight up while crouching.  Still, if you must go with the original controller (or one that only has 2 shoulder buttons) then 'aim-down' is the thing that makes the most sense to sacrifice, imo.  Item cancel is just too useful.  Pressing item select 4 times to switch from missiles to beam (if you have everything else) is just too much of a pain.

I guess I use the "claw" method with the default setup.  Right hand/ the tip of my thumb is almost always on the run button, while the middle part of my thumb - I use that for jump.  Then I use the top/side of my index finger to fire and item cancel.

The trickiest thing I try to do sometimes is holding item cancel and selecting a weapon for a one time use.

Hmmm...  It'd be nice to have a side scrolling wheel on the top of a controller to cycle through weapons back and forth.  Dial-a-weapon? Think

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I use:

Y - Shoot
B - Jump
A - Run
X - Item Select
L1 - Aim down
R1 - Aim up
This leaves Item Cancel mapped to Select, but I have Select mapped to L2 on my controller, so there's no stretching involved.

Also, Opium, it's interesting that you reverse the Aim Up / Down controls.  Is this just habit, or influence from other games?

Naw, I actually typed it wrong.  What I actually use is the other way around.

I have an unorthodox setup compared to what I've seen both here and in the past whenever this question comes up:

L - Aim Down
R - Aim Up
A - Shoot
B - Jump
X - Item Cancel
Y - Run
Start - Menu
Select - Item Select

I might have the aims backwards, but whichever way the game sets as the default is what I use.

Default setup for me. As i'm on virtual console i use classic controller so the select and start buttons are little more accessable, making defualt setup easier. However i can still play just as good with default on snes pad, just a little more stretching involved that's all. My right index shoots, aims up (although middle finger does this a lot too), presses select and start and a lot of the time item cancels on the Y button. While my thumb holds B to dash, (only time i let go is when i'm wall jumping or, very occasionally, during boss fights) A to jump on the middle part of my thumb like Gaius_4 and sometimes item cancels on the tip of my thumb.

For me:

B - Select missiles
Y - Run
Select - Cancel missiles

Everything else is the same.

I moved away from default long ago because of the need to hold run down all the time and because I found it inefficient to use the select button so frequently.

Same here. I also use this set-up for the Mega Man X games.

When using a keyboard, my layout is:

Z - Run
X - Jump
C - Shoot
LShift - Aim Up
Ctrl - Aim Down
RShift - Item Select
Space - Item Cancel

It has some flaws, but I've been able to get through a good number of hacks this way.

I dunno if I count as having a good time, but I use the default setup with a classic SNES pad held normally. My only problem is that the USB adapter I use is kinda shitty and certain buttons cancel each other out; e.g., if I'm holding run with the speedbooster equipped and not at peak speed then I will stop accelerating (but continue running) if I start charging my beam. This creates difficulties in a few spots, but they are so few and far between that it's not a huge problem.

Argh noob bridge.
Incidentally my keyboard setup has the same problem. If it's particularly bad I'll switch the buttons around to work better but yeah.
Also, no aim-up+fire+jump makes Mother Brain kinda annoying.
I don't play console enough to come up with a control scheme for serious play though, so I just make do with the default and do weird things with my hands if it's ever necessary. Yay for sillilly flexible and dexterous fingers.

Hated by all
My console controls:

L: Aim Up
R: Equip
Y: Fire
X: Cancel
B: Jump
A: Dash

I hate it when I can't adjust angle firing in console so much. If it was like the GBA for angle-firing, then that would solve all my problems.

USB Controller Setup (Logitech Dual Action Pro, order of buttons is exactly the numbered button order):
Y : Fire
B : Jump
A : Dash
X : Cancel
L1 : Aim Down
R1: Aim Up
L2 : Set Turbo L1 for arm pumping
R2: Equip

Funny, I follow almost the same format as yours, except D is my equip and Num 0 is my Aim Up (Ctrl if on a laptop). And V is pause. Do you have long fingers?
