Which do you think is better for the game? Up to the morning I thought the gamecube controller would be the best choice but then I remembered how it was pressure sensitive and might make aiming/shoulder pumping different.

Those who have tried them both what do you think?

GC controller works better for me, since I can hit jump (A) and fire (Y) while running (X) with no problem, using Z to switch weapons. Aiming is fine, but I'm not sure about shoulder-pumping, since I don't use it.
Classic controller is good, but to hit 3 buttons at the same time you need to hold your right hand sideways.

I like the Classic Controller (feels just like the SNES). For some reason the game won't let me use a 'Cube controller-- dunno if I'm doing anything wrong or what-- so I can't really judge that.

Is it plugged into socket 1?

Yep. I tried both a wireless and a wired controller. Dunno maybe I was tired and had it in socket four instead, but man, I really think it was one.

Front socket = player 1.

Yeah, for some reason the Wii has the controller ports going from right to left, with #4 being the closest to the memory card slots. That got my brother and I the first time we played Smash Bros Melee on the Wii.

Is the Classic Controller plugged into your Wiimote? I think it has to be unplugged for the GC Pad to work.

Not true, it works just fine for me, I can use either (or both) without unplugging the other.

Hm, as far as I remember it didn't work for me. But I'll go check again.

I'm pretty sure you have to hold in R or something on the GC controller as you boot the game to get it to work.

As for which controller I prefer - well I prefer to play it on the SNES with the SNES controller.  My SNES controller is really broken in from playing the game so much that I find that using anything else is a hassle.  The classic controller is very nice, but since its new it also has a very stiff dpad.  This makes quick morphs difficult and sometimes walljumping.  The dpad on my SNES controller feels looser and I can hit the down button to morph a lot faster than on the Classic controller.  Maybe I play this game too much...

Also not true. All you have to do to use a gamecube controller is plug it in.

About the SNES controller, back in the day when I was like 12, I liked it, but now its too small for me lol

Why would anyone even think of using the GameCube controller? That's for N64 and Gamecube games. The Classic Controller is the closest to the SNES controller, therefore it wins. Assign run to L.

i used the gc controller a bit when i tried the space-time beam and played a bit to mess around after doing the glitch. i didn't have the CC plugged though..

the d-pad is sure to be a bit of a trouble if you're not used to it's size. once past that, it rivals the CC since you can map buttons. most other SNES games were shit on the gc controller because the buttons had a weird arrangement and couldn't be remapped.

I bought SM with my Wii Points and played through the whole game with the GC controller.... eww.. It really didnt feel comfortable or what I was used to at all. So for a 100% run on the Wii I decided to splurge and buy the Classic Controller, and boy was it worth it!  grin new

diddo, you can even input both at the ame time (my bro and me did this in waverace, the driver looked drunk)

as for which is better, it's personal preference. The classic controller is like the SNES pad, which is what the game was made for, also another point is that the D-Pad is MUCH better.

what the GC controller has going for it is being able to do the 3 button thing easier.

also with the classic controller it is always tethered to your Wiimote unless you buy a special casing which still has the wiimote, but it is latched on so it doesn't dangle.

so it's a toss up really, a wavebird or Classic Controller would both be great for plaiyng it though really. so it's not like there is a losing choice.

After having trouble with the CC, I tried the GC pad and it is PURE WIN.  Z to dash, B to shoot and A to jump.

Y and X handle item selection/cancellation.  Th GBA controls for Fusion and ZM are still better, but I can't think of a better way of using SM given they insist on item selection and dashing.

Wait so I can use 2 controllers?!?

That would be awesome, my foot would be always on the dash button while I play with my hands, although when shinesparking I would use my hands.

Using the foot eh?  :P  That's so funny because I thought of doing just that...  Or working something out to where I could always have Run active, as well as a faster way to select and cancel weapons -- as opposed to using my thumb which isn't always as fast as I'd like it to be.

Of course the FASTEST way would be to voice activate/select whatever you wanted.  :o

I like Big Butts and I can not lie
You could always use the controller like a keyboard

on the contrary, that would actually be quite slow and unreliable.

now, if there was a way to directly translate neural impulses, now that would be something else entirely.

Then have, maybe, a 2nd person with you to watch and holding that 2nd controller and he/she would select whatever you call out.  :P

laugh new

Actually, the biggest limitation is the button placement.  I mean, I'm used to the locations for item select and cancel, as well as the shoulder buttons...  If I try to rearrange things I soon think it isn't working and I change things back to normal.  So the key is to (first find and then) practice with what is most ergonomic in the sense of button location... As if it were a new game that I've never played before.

:P I hate Gamecube controllers; they're a prime reason for my dislike of Melee. But the Classic controller is almost worse, because the d-pad and the analogue are terrible. They both have the same problem, too: if I'm trying to press a particular direction, occasionally an adjacent direction will get pressed also.

For instance, when I'm trying to spin-jump in Super Metroid, often the up or down directions will register mid-jump, taking me out of the spin jump.

Not to mention the analogue stick is poorly balanced; they really just should have taken an N64 analogue and glued it into place.  >:'(  The d-pad should have been similarly lifted straight off of an original Gameboy.

Edit: And in the Super Metroid "set controls" screen, you can only set the "aim diagonal up" and "aim diagonal down" buttons to a shoulder button. WTF. So I've got dash set to L, diagonal up set to R, and diagonal down set to... nothing. Great.

Yes, this bothered me, too. R is the most comfortable button for me to dash with (I use the gcn controller), and seeing as I rarely use aim down, it seemed to be the most logical button to leave out. Although that limits my ability to do a crystal flash, and although I haven't gotten into speedrunning SM yet, from what I understand, there are several tricks that require it. =/

The Classic Controller is much much better than the GC controller.  However my GC controller is a wavebird wireless.  Which is great because I hate wires and sit far away from my TV, but not great because the wavebird is bigger, and the analog stick kind of 'bounces' if that makes any sense, making hard to pull of some of the more technical moves.

On a wavebird, the D-pad is in a really awkward place and feels strange to use.  Classic controller feels like a SNES controller, which I love.  But until they get a wireless option, mine stays wrapped up in a drawer.
