Yeah, the final fight with the beetles and MB really needed a hint. I kept trying to, y'know, KILL them all. Like with every other battle in the game. Even when I actually won that fight I didn't know why. I knew I hadn't killed them all, and I didn't notice that I targeted MB. I was too busy trying to shoot all the beetles and must have locked on to her by accident. It wasn't until I watched that fight in the movie gallery that I noticed.

The Power Bomb QM thing is probably top of my list of "Dumb as Fuck Moments in Other M".

For the Queen, as soon as I saw her originally I wondered if bombs were going to be a secret attack on her like in ROS. So when she finally swallows you, it's what I first tried.
Naturally, I died that first time and could see she wasn't harmed by them. So I tried the next best thing with a good old PB. (The game does show you how to use them right at the beginning of the game, and I figured the Queen had to be one of the final bosses/the final boss, and it was the only item that wasn't activated yet.)

With MB, I think I died one or twice there before I got her. I think with me I figured she was the real threat and so I tried to blast her once I had an opening which triggered the end.

You were given no hint to power bomb the glass tubes in Maridia in Super Metroid, but I don't see a complaint there. (Granted, the glass tubes can't kill you)

True, I guess we take that for granted.  We still call it the noob tube though, so maybe we need to come up with names for the parts in other m that define us as noobs, too.

I died the first time on it.  The second time I was like 'hey, maybe I should use PB's' but I died because I started too late.  Third time I was good though.  It was a nice, subtle, Metroid 2 reference/homage.

Same. Except make that fourth or fifth time. Stupid thing won't charge unless you let go of the fire button until you get in the stomach.

The n00b tube is called that because so many people were asking questions about it, like the n00b bridge.

You see, the n00b bridge is a great example of why it's good to read the manual.  "There is a run button!"  There's a pic somewhere that screams that, but I can never seem to find it...

I like turtles.
Of course, many were pirating Super Metroid when they played that part and didn't have a manual.  The Controller Setting menu still could've tipped them off, though.

I don't believe pirating was an issue at all at that point in time.  I never remember hearing about it until much later, when disc-based stuff came about.

the manual spoils a lot of stuff if you don't want to see spoilers before playing the game (i hadn't watched a single video of the game before i played it)

also, the game's mechanic of telling yourself when you can use a new item is what really throws you off. your mind is waiting for the confirmation messages to use each item.

The game is subliminally training you to be a good obedient soldier like Samus, and not even try using anything without Adam's approval.

Time bomb set get out fast!
If so, it failed. Shortly after I saw James dead, I figured "no more humans left I can harm" -- this being Adam's original rationale for banning power bombs -- and tried charging one up. Didn't work. That was one more reason I didn't think to try it on the Queen.

You don't have to pirate a game to lack the manual for it. Used games often come without manuals, especially if the game was sold in a cardboard box rather than a plastic case. Something about boxes says "throw me out" while cases say "keep me".

You can charge power bombs up the entire game, but it won't let you do it.  I think they're supposed to give you the impression that Samus will only use them when absolutely necessary, even though she has the choice to use them whenever she wants (Gravity Suit before getting sucked into space, Power Bombs in Queen's gut).

Also, the game gives you the Power Bomb icon during that scene.  It's incredibly subtle and they don't tell you about the change.

Yeah, a guy at GameFAQs chided me for not checking my equipment screen. Dude, I like the game too, but it's okay to acknowledge the screwups.

Oh, I didn't check the equipment screen.  It's on the HUD.  I doubt many people picked up on it, though.

But then again...she took an AWFUL big risk using the Power Bomb though.  Considering Madeline Bergman was in the next room and all.  But that kinda goes against what you said earlier when she could use them even though nobody was around, since she was looking for a survivor and found one.

Time bomb set get out fast!
Well, when they discussed the dangers before, they were talking about an open-air blast, not setting one off inside a heavily-armoured monster. Madeline was also behind a thick door. Samus presumably figured that between the two, she would be safe -- and considering that she had unleashed the damn thing, the small risk of incinerating her wasn't so upsetting.

Well, the door was blown pretty much clean away.  I'm sorta surprised Madeline didn't get a slight tan at least.
