Hi guys, just a few questions for those with the time to answer.

Is the main m2k2 site dead and/or not being updated? There's no Other M section and the items-being-stolen-skip in MP2 hasn't even been featured.

Is anybody trying to speed run Other M seriously? There may not be any sequence breaks, but it still seems like a fun game to run. SDA doesn't even have a page for other m. What's the deal?

Feel free to be the first one to submit. :p

I think some people are upset about how the game kind of messes up Samus' character, is pretty easy buttoned, and has some annoying gameplay elements like Where's Waldo sequences. I don't think it's a *bad* game myself, but it's not exactly real popular witht he 2k2 community.

Yeah I definitely think that the lack of MOM shit on the site is due to MOM=shit.

Well, doesn't hurt that a lot of interest disappeared once we found out there was little we could do to sequence break the game.

True, it's just like fusion in that regard, as all of your powerups are controlled by the storyline. You can't get anything except when the game decides you can.

In my opinion Other M is a decent game, but it's a horrible Metroid game. If that makes sense. :P

Difference is Fusion manages to be consistently great in spite of this.

I really don't have much grievance with the general gameplay itself. Only the storyline, and certain specific gameplay elements such as Where's Waldo? (which is only a minor annoyance after the first time you play, since you know where you need to click after doing it the first time)

Unless you block the traumatic experience from your memory and the PTSD causes you to break down and cry you forget where to point next time.

i do wonder if anyone will ever attempt even an "average" run just to have something up on SDA.

that is, if it doesn't get rejected...
i doubt anyone will spend the amount of time needed to do a super tight run in this game.

I bought video recording software... I may as well do SOMETHING I can brag about with it. :P

What's the requirements for getting one up?

Don't get hit ever, don't miss a jump and god help you if you lose a minute in a five hour run.

I meant like file types and quality levels :P

I dunno what do to try to tackle between segmented or single segment runs... do I go for the True ending or just the first one... should I let cutscenes play out because they don't impact the final time?

I know there's a lot of tricks I don't know how to do and don't particularly WANT to do (The first Tree Spider skip) that would probably be required for a segmented run.

Go single segment and skip the cutscenes, cutscene skipping is pretty much required. Go for the full ending because it is your duty as a man to see this through to the end.

I'm not sure I'd want to do SS since (almost) all saves are forced anyways, and it's a ton easier to focus on getting a good 15 minutes instead of a good 4 hours. (also, it's likely save my sanity as I could do a segment and just leave it alone for a while. remember this'd be my first speedrun)

I just don't want to do the work and then be told "You missed/ignored a speed trick here. Not accepted."

If you go segmented, that's exactly what you're going to be told.

Well, maybe not because nobody cares about this game, but the chances are higher.

technically, it is SS if you do everything in 1 shot without dying or resetting.(didn't miles save in one of his SS runs?)

imo, the second ending is better when doing 100%.

There can be a lot less dodging and a lot more Pew-pew-pew.

On this note again, I really don't want to do 4 hour playthroughs. (I'm a nub speed runner remember, I'm not used to it)
I don't think I would be able to sit still through that OR survive the inevitable 3h45m slip up death.

A full list of the "breaks" would be nice too, cause the only one I can remember is the Tree Spider skip via bombs. (I'm slowly working up the resolve to just say "fuck it, I'll do the spider skip to segment it")

There's a place where you can bomb jump across a water room to skip an underwater puzzle. I think that's the only other break.

I seem to recall that, but it's the same trick so in theory I get past the Tree Spider and I should be able to do that too.

There's also the Speed Booster jump in that one Crane area (with sand around it), and the only other thing I recall is wall jumping up those spinning columns.

If there isn't anything else, I need to start figuring out enemy strategies.
Back on my first playthrough I used the power beam way too much when Missiles can easily stun/knock over enemies for the Finishers.

Yeah, there are a couple of well placed shinesparks here and there, but not too many tricks overall I think. (Like walking on the railing and sparking up past some of those wall jumping columns in one room. Can't remember what it is called at this point but it has one of those Phantoon-like monsters at the top where you need Wave or Plasma to take them out.)

I also remember that rapid fire missile trick I found out about while trying to break into the high gravity area leading to Nightmare. (Where I'd flick my wrist to move the pointer off screen and on screen as rapidly as possible so I could recharge the missile's timer and get something close to Prime's rapid fire missile speed out of them.) For some enemies it was quite effective compared to other attacks but I don't know how helpful it would be overall in a run. Figured it might be worth mentioning though.

And besides, when you can get instant charge beams due to the sense move and be able to juggle yourself from one finisher to the next if enemies are close enough to each other (Pirates especially) missiles might not be as vital in the end.

I wasn't thinking about using the rapid missile trick in the run because we haven't found an easy, and reliable way to do it.

But I mean, I hardly used missiles at ALL during my first run. And some enemies took forever. I need to relearn which ones are quicker with Beam or missile. Or even just some simple strategies, like for the hardtop rusher (The big rhino-like thing)
