I didn't see a thread about this game, so I figured I'd make one. 17,000,000 different guns, four-player co-op, RPG elements, comic book-styled visuals...

I got it for PC the other day, and I'm in love with it, so far. I'm a level-12 Soldier named Serris, currently equipped with a scoped shotgun that has a 1x incendiary bonus and +50% critical hit damage, and a pistol with a 2x incendiary bonus. The game's very deep, and very fun to play. Add me on Steam if you want to play: Odyssey1319

Why am I so amazing?
I'm semi-interested in it, but would play it solely single player. How is it in that regard? Also, how does it stack up, in your opinion, to the similarily themed shooter/RPG Fallout 3?

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Well, my PC's not quite up to running it:

Dual Core @ 2.6
2GB RAM
Mediocre Graphics Card

So, I managed to get it running on minimal everything at the resolution just below 640x480.  Yes, really.

I played for a while, determined to get past the RPG obligatory explanatory early stages.

I got outside the town, and had my first taste of freedom, only to find that all enemies that are likely to kick your arse (nothing stopping you fighting them) are highlighted with a skull, so it still kinda restricts where you go, but more importantly, I had to grind just for a few early level ups.

I got almost nowhere before giving in, and uninstalling.

The premise seemed good, but I am not a lover of grinding.

I haven't tried this game yet, but I would like to try a demo.

I added you on steam, btw.

Added you as well, Odyssey.

So far, Single-Player is alright.  Gets a little boring at times running around, but not too bad.  Challenge so far is decent.  Haven't really found a place where I had to seriously stop and grind, as I'm usually what level I need to be by the time I get to the next challenge.

Haven't had the chance to do online co-op yet.  Then again, pretty much everyone I know is a hunter so the variation there is gone.  So far I can't really see a need for co-op though unless you just want a bunch of people all running around together.

Co-op is definitely the best way to go if you can do it. My brother and I got to the Vault last night in a co-op game (He was a soldier, I was a hunter) and we had a blast playing it. Afterward you can continue right from the final boss so that you can go back and do any side mission you hadn't done yet, or else start the game again on a harder difficulty  where everything is tougher and the items are much better. (Like Diablo 2) Unfortunately we had to return the game to Blockbuster today so we couldn't go on further, but we had a lot of fun with it in the week we had it and put plenty of hours in during that time.

There was only one real spot where we got stuck for a little bit, but otherwise the game wasn't that difficult overall. (And sadly the final boss was a complete pushover that barely scratched either of us before we blew it away) Mostly I recommend co-op for the fact that the game is simply a lot more fun if you're running around with a friend than if you're alone.

Oh, and we loved the Clap-Traps.

In single-player, it's a good game, but I can see it getting boring without someone else there to bring a little variety to the table. To me, this is the definitive shooter/RPG experience, but only if you're playing with friends.

I've been playing all day, and I'm now a level-32 Soldier on my second playthrough. I've got some pretty awesome weaponry, too. A scoped SMG with a 3x incendiary bonus, a revolver with a 3x incendiary bonus, and a scoped shotgun with a 15% damage and spread increase. The variety in the weapons is just absolutely amazing. I've also upgraded my skills to increase my magazine capacity and shotgun proficiency. The final boss battle was a bit anti-climactic, but the rest of the game is awesome.

The whole cell-shading crap is a major turn-off for me. Maybe if there was a mod to get rid of it, so it actually had good graphics I would try it out or play it.

have you tried it? i've recently been playing xiii (another cel-shaded fps), and i think the cel-shading does nothing but add to the experience. if cel-shading fits the game it looks fantastic, and from what i've heard about borderlands, that's absolutely true. just because they're not realistic doesn't mean the graphics aren't good.

also, if the graphics were "realistic", they'd be full of browns and grays and look like every other fpsrpg on the market, specifically fallout 3. that's not a good reason to use cel-shading in and of itself but again, if it works well with the game, it's awesome.

definitely looking forward to playing this game.

Personally I can't stand cel-shaded games and get a headache from playing them. Crackdown for example was an awesome game, but even just playing it for short periods of time at my cousin's house was too much. I also tried that  Champions Online game and quit playing after 20 minutes because of it.

If the cel-shading was removed from Borderlands, it would also be full of browns and grays.

I find this game pretty fun, I'm playing through it with my brother on the sexbox. I like how they made it fun and diddn't worry about the way it looks. The split-screen action is extremely fun!

No rule saying you have to play with someone exactly your level.  Quit being so picky because I seriously could've used some help taking down a boss earlier.

I couldn't get co-op to work earlier though, so no big deal.

Okay, I admit, I did judge borderlands a bit steep. In game, the actual cel-shadeing isn't that much of a problem and isn't very noticeable, but the FOV is absolutely terrible. luckily you can edit it in the .ini file.

Also found a neat trick, when you sprint your head bobs up and down and moves the screen up and down. It gets EXTREMELY annoying. If you scroll the mouse wheel up and down (change weapons) then there is non head-bobbing at all and its all nice and smooth.

Borderlands so far seems like a cartoony and wonky version of fallout 3. Nothing is serious, and there isn't any drama (at least I haven't seen any yet).

Over all, it actually is a good game and I'm glad I downloaded it. I haven't tried co-op yet but it sounds promising.

Nice to see you've come around a bit. Want to play, sometime? I guess I should take a cue from nn12000 and start playing with people that aren't my level. I just helped two of my friends EXP farm their way up 11 levels because I'm on my second playthrough.

Beat Borderlands last night at level 36 or so.  Final boss, as well as a majority of other bosses, was disappointing.  Having a little turret that refills your ammo is probably one of the cheapest things ever, but that's what it's there for.

Poision;  The game does start out pretty calm, but it gets pretty intense later on.  I dropped every side-mission I had to finish up because of how intense it was getting.  Definitely one of the best games I've played in a long time.

I especially liked the RPG elements, despite hating RPG's themselves.  A little disappointed that dying only meant losing money and not exp. as well.  The only time you actually really need any money is at the very start of the game anyways to buy SDUs, or to replenish ammo/health.  Any gun you would ever hope to want you'll find somewhere on the battlefield.  And more often than not, you'll find a weapon (or a shield) that you can use for the next ten levels before you find something even better.

If I can figure out how to get Co-Op to work (always times out), I'd definitely be up to helping out anyone who needs it, or just plain kicking ass on the battlefield.

i fucking hate games where dying makes you lose experience (though diablo ii does it pretty well in that that only happens in the higher difficulties). glad to hear that's not the case in b.lands.

I forgot to mention that the other thing that drove me potty about this game was the damned Counterstrike-style crosshair, where it's less accurate the more you fire. =C

I saw potential in the game, but it just wasn't to my liking.

I didn't get it through steam, is it easy to set up multiplayer without it?

Ah cool. I thought the max level was 20 (heard someone say this somewhere) but since you beat it at 36, what is the max?

Doesn't, like, every FPS have that? The more you fire a gun the more inaccurate it gets?

Nope.  I remember one of the first was Quake II, and that just had the machinegun rise slightly, which you could counter, but since it was used in Counterstrike, it seems that every game they make has to have it.  I want a shooter where I shoot, and I hit. =P

I never had your problem, Quietus.  Then again, I mostly mained shotties and snipers.  :P

Poision:  I believe 50 is the max.  At least, that's what I'm told.

Quote from arkarian:

While I do hate losing exp, it does give you incentive to not die in battle, and to carefully plan your next move when faced with a large group of enemies.

They do make up for it though because bosses will regain all their HP should you die in a battle while grunts don't.  Then again, dying in a boss-fight will always spawn you outside of the arena, sometimes allowing you to cheese the fuck out of it.  Had several instances where I just stood outside of the arena, safe from the boss, while I just picked at his health.

Odyssey;  How does the second run-through work?  Do you find someone to talk to to start it, keeping all your stats and weapons?  Or do you have to start a new game and choose to do the higher difficulty?

Edit:  Nevermind.

i haven't played a single modern shooter that does what you want. more powerful/faster guns have more recoil, so they're harder to aim; that makes sense.
