You'd probably be better off changing the title to 'Interview with Calvin and Hobbes's Creator', as some people might not know who he is.

dunno, his name is still one of the most popular among comics artists, and he's been out of the game for years.

this made me laugh. zits is one of the very worst comics out there. :/

Yeah, but 'among comic artists' isn't among the people.  It strikes me as a bit like films, where I don't really give a monkey's who writes / directs them - they're either good or not.  I like some comics, but I have no idea who writes any.

I wonder if he has any of those Calvin window stickers where he's wizzing on the emblem of an auto maker that is different than what he drives? Think

I might be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure Watterson has nothing to do with those. IIRC I don't think he ever put a copyright on Calvin's image or something like that.

If you don't know who Bill Watterson is this topic is not for you anyway, whether you liked Calvin and Hobbes or not.

Fuck whoever said that, that's retarded. 'Frazz' is closer but still nowhere near as good.

Correct, he didn't do any merchandising with his comic and it was awesome.

i guess the reason zits bugs me is that the author thinks he's really clever and really understands "those crazy teenagers these days" but he actually does nothing more than perpetuate common stereotypes. some of said stereotypes are probably true, but if that's the case then he's even less clever than he thinks he is. it's the kind of comic middle class moms read at the breakfast table and think is just darling.

watterson on the other hand i think was extraordinarily adept at capturing the spirit of a child and presenting it in a new way that did more than just elicit the kneejerk reaction of "oh haha my kid does that too".

Well first of all, an interview with Bill Watterson is significant because he has remained almost completely silent since the end of Calvin and Hobbes run in 95.  This strip transcended generations and in my opinion is the greatest comic of all time (my roommate and I still keep every single "calvin" book in the bathroom and read through all them regularly, each of us owning the collectors edition with every comic, which both of us still read regularly).

I personally like 'Zits,' but I don't think it is the spiritual successor to "Calvin" as many feel it is, since it doesn't at all transcend generations. While for most in our demographic, 'Zits' will have something to offer, it is, as so much of our current media, based solely around the conventions and idiosyncrasies of our current time and subject, and not something that addresses the Human experience as a whole the way "Calvin" did.  I don't believe there has been anything to fill that gap in the 15 years since Watterson stopped publishing "Calvin and Hobbes."

I was so happy to see Watterson break his silence to talk about what "Calvin" meant to him and I am very happy for this interview, despite my sadness over the last 15 years of Calvinless existence.
