first post here in a looong time.
after deciding to run SM for the first time in ages, I got 0:58, with 41% items... I used 2 savestates though. Before the Draygon fight, and before the zebites skip.
Not my best, but I'm still fairly happy considering I haven't touched the game for about nearly a year.

Edit: Just got 0:51 :)

I'm pretty proud of this considering it's only one of a handful of 100% runs I've ever done on Super for some reason:
2:12, 100% (from memory*), no SBs (natural route?), and saved the Etecoons and Dachora.

Seeing as I haven't been going for pure speed and not using any sequence breaks throughout my series run, that time shocked me since I expected it to be about an hour or so more than it was.

*I say from memory even though I had to look up ONE missile tank I somehow overlooked in the Wrecked Ship on my way through there. I knew it was there since I pretty much always grab it on my speed runs, but this time for some reason I bypassed it without realizing.

the only time i did a speed run of SM was a long time ago, i got 1:20~1:40 100% and saved the critters

from memory, i only remember of sequencing breaking to get the wave beam early on, of course, i used some alternatives routes, but only because they were easier for me than the normal route.

Where am I?
My first and probably last speed run of this game EVER!!!
1:04
32%
Single segment played on emulator in real time.

This had no preplanned route and I took many unnecessary detours. Also, I haven't watched A super metroid speedrun for quite awhile.

I don't know why, but I enjoyed this run up to red brinstar, then it just annoyed the hell out of me. I got grapple without power bombs (because I CANNOT GET THE WRECKED SHIP EARLY) that sucked ass because I had to IBJ which I'm good at but for some reason I kept failing at. I grapple Draygon to death. Fought GT. I would say the only part of this run that actually surprised me was Ridley, his fight wasn't bad at all and I usually suck ass at killing him.

I don't understand how people can stand speedrunning this game, it just drives me insane...

Also, one last thing I wish to share: While escaping, my thoughts were "fuck the animals."

Good job, Tyjet.  I think speedrunning this is like any other - you just have to LOVE playing it.

Nice. I got 80% in 65 minutes on console (I think my controller wants to hate me after trying to do wall jumps, especially on the one where you can get Wave without Grapple. And I beat my brother's record of 63% in 77 minutes... well, I only saved before Draygon under electrocution fear and Ridley because he is the bane of me in this game).

I used to speedrun Zero mission and I didn't love it, and I had gotten fairly decent times. As for loving Super metroid I have ever since I was 2-3 years old, and I love playing hacks and hacking it; I just think that I was annoyed because I've been in a pissy mood today, so I may try to beat my 1:04.

I reckon you should easily beat it, especially if you knew you took loads of unnecessary detours.

Managed to get 1:37 100% on emulator (with save states). Nothing special but I need more practice at this title to reduce that time.

If you're looking to drop your time, there are a few things that make a big difference to times:

Route - Get this down first.  Be certain of your route before you start out.  Eliminate backtracking as much as possible.  Possibly check some of the current best speedruns for comparison.
Bosses - Quick boss fights make a world of difference.  It's surprising how many minutes can be wasted with poor boss fights.
Room Strategies - Just two seconds wasted in each room repeated over the course of the game adds a whole bunch of minutes in total.  Use an emulator, save in door transitions, and practice each room until you're sick of seeing it.  It's surprising how quickly you can learn faster methods of negotiating each room, and they all add up.

Thanks for the tips.
My route isn't the best but it's the one I've always known. I've watched nearly every speed run of this game actually. Emulation and console runs. Some of the tricks I still can't wrap my head around. For example, the short speed booster. That's the hardest thing for me ha.
Bosses are probably the worst thing about my run except for Kraid obviously.
Running through the rooms I can see being the second thing I'm bad at. But yeah, I see where your going with it.
Overall, I'm not sure what my goal should be. I generally always do 100% runs, so maybe I should aim in the neighborhood of 1:2x next? Seems reasonable. Right now this game is on the back burner though. I had that time for about a month now and never worked on it since Other M was released.

My boss battles are kinda crappy, and I don't do any really short charges (except in CH), and I average about 1:11 100%, sometimes a few minutes more or less. Would you mind telling us your route?

If you guys didn't know my video and explanation on how to Super Short Charge is on the main page of the site.

You could also find it on my YouTube page in the link below.

Also note there are not many places in a 100% Run that require a 3 tap charge most only require a 2 tap.

For instance you only have to 2 tap against Dragon but, I do a 3 tap anyway for some reason.

Sure.
Morph ball, First missile, bombs, mockball to super missile, charge beam, spazer, High Jump, Varia, Speed Booster, wave beam, grapple, first power bomb, Ice beam, X-Ray visor + red brinstar clean up, gravity suit + clean up in Wrecked Ship, green Brinstar clean up, start Maridia clean up, space jump, finish Maridia clean up, spring ball, plasma, start Norfair clean up, screw attack, finish up Norfair, blue Brinstar clean up, and finally finish up Crateria saving the energy tank and 2 missiles above your ship. It's hard to explain ha. But it doesn't involve to many crazy tricks that I know are possible.

Get varia before going down to norfair for hi-jump.  The wall jump to get to kraids area is easy to get down after some practice.  Get xray AFTER space jump because its much faster to get through that long room that way.  Grab it on your way back up from norfair on your way to blue brinstar clean-up.

I've actually pulled off that jump but I haven't managed to get it down yet. I was never to sure when to grab x-ray, but after space jump would make a lot more sense. I figured this route is pretty solid. I've seen it done many times. Now I just need to get everything else down. Thanks!

For the jump to Kraid, I've actually always done it from the smaller ledge below.  Either way, one fairly easy wall-jump, and you're up.

I'd say the most obvious change that I can see for a 100% is to leave Grapple / Croco until after you've done Lower Norfair.  The only room that is really any tougher is getting the Energy Tank in the Wrecked Ship, in the room with the water and spiky fish.  You can do this with Hi-Jump equipped, but it is a lot easier if you temporarily unequip them.  That'll knock a chunk off your time straight away, as you have Plasma for Croco, and things like Space Jump for the large, annoying rooms down there.

BTW, if one skips grapple until later in the game, when exactly do you pick it up?  After Ridley or on you way to ridley?

You do it after the whole of Lower Norfair, and on your way back to the end-game.  It means you can one-hit KO Croco, and fly through a bunch of rooms like the huge pre-grapple room with Space Jump.  That whole area is left until this stage.

heh so i finally beat SM with 100% items for the first time 3 years after i got it.

5:04 100%

i learned some tricks like mockball and wall jumps and stuff but i was still discovering a lot since there were several items i got for the first time. the x-ray scope is a chore to use and i prefer the PB method of Fusion/ZM to find hidden stuff.
i think the next time i play, i'll try any% but first i'll have to check out some vids to learn the route and practice what i can do.

Forget the any% run. Just keep cutting down your time on a 100% run for now. It's a far better way to get better at the game.
