You can increase your window of opportunity by firing a charged Spazer (+whatever else) beam. If done right, it will travel at basically the same speed as a super, bot won't lose itself offscreen so easily.

I worked on a new speedrun throughout the past few days, and managed to come out with a new time of 0:42.

Here are my segment times:

Ceres Elevator - 0:00
Pre-Kraid save - 0:06
After Hello-Jump - 0:09
Before Ice Beam - 0:11
Red Brinstar, after Power Bombs - 0:13
Pre-Botwoon save - 0:20
Pre-Draygon save - 0:22
Main Norfair room, before LN - 0:25
Elevator to Lower Norfair - 0:26 (I think)
Pre-Ridley save - 0:27
At the ship, before Tourian - 0:34
Pre-Mother Brain - 0:38 (I was going to skip this save, but MB kept killing me and I got sick of doing Tourian over and over again T_T)

I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of this game. I'm only 6 minutes away from Smokey's ex-WR of 0:36 and only 4 away from his SS ex-WR of 0:38. I'd say I'm rising to a pretty competent level. :)

EDIT: I've recorded my own video of the Ridley Chainsaw beam kill, done in what I believe to be the most optimal method. I think this is actually the fastest way to kill Ridley on a 100% run (it can't be done on an any% or low% due to lack of necessary supplies).

That is easily way slower both in realtime and ingame time. Have you not seen Cp's 100% run? Not to mention the energy management setup, multiple pause screens, and there is no possible way to kill Ridley with that beam faster than shoving supers into him. =\

Edit: Oh, I sometimes forget this is not a TAS thread. Regardless, it still seems much slower for a 100% run even in realtime. >.<

Well, obviously it's way slower in realtime, but I wasn't sure if the setup would still make it slower in game time (which is what [most] realtime speedrunners go for).

Either way, it's still an interesting method and a cool video :-/

The fastest I have ever gotten is 2:29 or something, and I screwed around a lot and did not aim for the fastest I could go.

Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
You're ignoring the details.

The Chainsaw beam can be fired stupidly fast.
The Chainsaw beam *should* be able to hit multiple times per volley (haven't tested this), so a TASer can likely get all 5 hits in.
The Chainsaw beam does 150 Super Missile damage. Which is doubly effective against Ridley, thus 300 damage per hit. That's 1500 per volley.
It only requires that a powerbomb is active. It doesn't have to be a permanent powerbomb bubble, that's just for convenience.

It has a lot of potential for the fight that I would like to see put to use, but nobody has yet :/

Hey, what about me? I made a video of a really fast way of doing it you know... Boo hoo!

Unless you meant in a TAS or console speedrun, in which case yeah, it hasn't been done (yet) ;)

The problem with just using regular powerbombs though is that once he gets hit by one he is invincible for a really long time, so you can't get too much chainsaw damage in per used powerbomb.

If the only requirement is a power-bomb being active can't one be detonated/timed so that it's active somewhere in the corner but doesn't hit Ridley? Or does it swoop the whole room?

No, the room is too small to detonate a powerbomb without touching Ridley. You could try, but it won't work, as far as I know.

I'm pretty certain a powerbomb detonated at the top would leave enough room at the bottom for Ridley to hide, and vice versa (especially if you dropped the powerbomb in the acid). It helps that Ridley flies away from them as much as possible.

Hmmm. You're right. If you drop a powerbomb in the acid, the explosion doesn't touch Ridley. You can also do it at the top, where you won't take damage. But the powerbomb usually slow down the game, making it really hard to aim (for a console speedrunner, at least).

My 100% would probably be about 2 hours. I'd do it but I don't have my power cord for my SNES.

You can still give it a go on an emulator - just disable the Save State key, so that you can't be tempted by old habits.  That's what I always do for a console-conditions run.

I got 1:27 on my low % run.. 27%.  Hmm..  I've got (close to) 1:30 on a 100% run before.  Not sure if that's much better, or maybe it's give and take.

12:01 on a 100% attempt (I think I'm in the mid or high 90s as far as %).  I spent a couple hours just messing around, though.  This is my very first run.  I'm trying for under 3 hours next time.

I think the last time i've tried a speedrun without savestate was three years ago. Since i started playing this game (i think it was 1994/5) i was in love with it. But i didn't have a Snes so i used to play in my friend's house. Three years ago i've seen a video of Red Scarlet, she collected 100% in 55 min. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. Never thought there were so many tricks. Till there, my best time was 1:30 100%. I borrowed a friend's Snes and bought the game. I've tried very hard and my final time was 1:00 100%. After that i discovered TASvideos.org and its amazing videos. Think if i try now i could get under 0:55 min whith the new tricks i've learned on Tasvideos.org and Hotarubi's runs, but i'm too lazy.

Is breaking a world record worth a few hours of your time?

That's my dream! But although i want to do it, i don't have a Snes, only the Original Game. Every time i start to play on the emulator i feel tempted to use the savestate to correct some mistakes. I'm about to buy a Snes and when it happen i'll break it for sure, although i'll probably not be abble to share since recording console runs is a pain in the ass. Does anybody know aN easy way to record movies in console conditions? Heard that SDA is not accepting VHS anymore.

you can just record on vhs and then copy to dvd later but it kills the quality.

For the most part, I think DVD recorders are the easiest setup to go with.  Unfortunately they're still a little too expensive for me.

I think the cheapest dvd recorders i saw in the shop were a little over a £100. I think it was curry's I got mine in. The trouble is I don't think these ones had any HDD. Not until they get over the £140 mark most probably. Ironically for me I have to use re-writable discs for my speed runs that i want to submit. Even though mines got over 200 hours worth of HDD space on it. Which i guess i'll just use for speed runs that i want to watch myself. Or anything i create for that matter. I might do my RBO or NBMB on it.
