I'm a little bit confused.  No matter how much I look around, I can't seem to find anyone mentioning this.  I have never been able to perform the mockball reliably, so I rely on arm pumping to get these sequence breaks.  It's much easier to do, and quicker because of a smaller chance of screwing it up.  What gives?

Mock balling, just try it staying still, if you morph and don't bounce you are good, then try it while moving, then running.

I don't really mind not being able to perform a mock ball, it doesn't seem to me to be THAT useful, except speedballing into the morphball maze in lower Norfair for the PB tank.  I was just curious as to why nobody mentions using arm pumping for the SM/IB sequence breaks, for the benefit of people who can't mock ball.

How do you arm pump?

I just switch on autofire and hold both.

Yes, you have to use the dash or it doesn't work.  I meant L + R specific autofire.

Probably because of this site's nature being console-based speedruns, so auto-fire would be considered unacceptable.  For emulated runs, it's fine, and of course the TASes all do it, but it's next to impossible to do without auto-fire, so everybody mockballs.

Zknight: The idea of arm pumping is that for every press and release of the button, Samus moves foward two pixels, one for the button press, and one when you return to the original pose.  TASers abuse it heavily, as it enables you to move much faster than just running, since they can spam it every other frame.  This is why in TASes, it always looks like Samus is aiming down.  One of the other benefits is that it enables you to pass the Speed Booster gate rooms, like those mentioned in this thread.

Can this be used to get a faster speed booster?

If you mean moving faster, yes.  You still move forward those pixels each time you press it.

If you mean achieving the blue booster status sooner, no.  If you are doing a Super Short Charge, you want to minimise your forward movement, so it'd be pointless.

@Quietus,  I didn't just mean this site, everywhere I have looked people only mention mockballing through these rooms.  I have two SNES controllers with button-specific autofire programming, are you saying that this is IMPOSSIBLE to do on a console?  If I could find a reasonably priced SM cart, I would try it myself, but the last one I laid eyes on physically was about 6 years ago, and no matter what I offered, the guy wouldn't let it go.

No, I'm saying that it's impossible unassisted, and the large majority of people use a standard controller.  I'm more surprised that you said you were able to get the Super Missile with just auto-fire.  I understood that it was necessary to arm pump at full speed, and even then it requires a small jump to get under the last gate before the door.

Here's the latest fastest run of Super Metroid, in which you can see the room from about 8:00.  You may need to check it a few times to see it, but there's a very small jump before the third gate.

Yeah, I see the jump you mentioned.  I've played through SM probably 300+ times, if only because it is my favourite game, and I only recently discovered the arm pump trick.  I decided to try it in the rooms I mentioned, and it works best if you start your auto L+R then take your first step and hold run (like quick charge, I guess).  Never had to jump at the end, but then again, I'm not a fanatical speed-runner, I just like seeing how quickly I can do it with my skill set.

Like I said before, I can't find a cart or I would play exclusively on the console, and when I play, the only thing I use that isn't on the SNES is the occasional save state.  Try it yourself if you can, you'll see what I'm talking about.  It doesn't work EVERY time, you might have to exit/reenter the room once or twice, but it is reliable enough.

Oh, forgot to say this, when you use it to get the IB, start in the Norfair shaft, with the quick run and pumping, and when you get to the second gate, you have to quickly morph or you won't be able to get through.

First 15 minutes, from Ceres to just after Kraid, with the sequence breaks I mentioned, if anyone is interested.

edit:  I watched the video and decided to try out a speedrun for the first time, thought I did ok, 1:18 at the ship before going to MB...  Then when I healed I realized I missed 1 missile pack and 1 SM pack somewhere... :P oh well, at least I recorded the whole run this time. :D

I don't think turbo controllers are unacceptable. They don't do anything a human can't actually do. Especially when there were officially sanctioned turbo controllers such as the NES Advantage on the NES.

I agree to a point, but I guess it's what you define as 'the original console'.  I don't believe any were shipped with them, and I'd kinda feel robbed if a speedrun of mine was obsoleted just because somebody obtained a turbo controller. Not talking

I think that's the case for most of us, but I guess some people just can't get on with it.  I took to it like a duck to water, as it's essentially the fireball movement from Street Fighter, which I'm more than used to spamming. aiwebs_004
