For all Super Metroid fans, the currently newest and fastest any% TAS by Cpadolf is now available on AVI!

SuperMetroid_TAS_24_Cpadolf.avi

It aims for fastest in-game time as opposed to real time, which allows to collect more items, and thus makes the run more diversified to watch. The exact completion time is 0:24'04, which is only 4 sec away of 0:23. This run shows the latest tricks known so far, and is a must see for everybody who plans on doing competitive speedruns of this game.

Enjoy!

Notes:
The AVI is encoded with the x264 codec.
Use VLC or Media Player Classic to playback it, or if you want to playback it on nearly any player, install FFDShow which is a very good x264 (including many other formats) decoder.

I'm on Dial-up. Embarassed

Is this available in smv? (I doubt it) :(

Sorry for asking if that's a stupid question.

Amazing TAS. I just watch it. Wink

I watch that in youtube. I think you made some mistake when you recorded that. TAS part 1 ending when you get charge beam TAS part 2 start when you get PB. But this not very important.

It was so nice run, probably lowest possible. 23.5x is probably too hard even TAS. I know it was close. This is one coolest TAS ever what i see, just like ZM tas run too.

Someone can help me out here?  It works good up until the room with the grapple fish in Maridia and it desync's or whatever, this also happened with Saturn's, it's always the same room and same spot.  Any idea of wut I'm not doing?  The WIP1 is checked.

I dunno, sometimes it seems desyncs happen for no reason... Oh and Master, I think you checked the first part of another TAS I made that ends at chargebeam.

Yeah. I watching now that first part again. Last time my flash player have something technical trouble and it stopped after charge.

My flashpalyer are bit broken last three weeks. It sometimes stopped dowload too early.  At the latest 30 minutes flash video is too long watch.

Great run! I don't understand why this wasn't published.

I plan on using this same route for my unassisted any% run, only Hi-jump, Speed booster and Wave beam will be grabbed before Phantoon.

The reason is that the run itself was ~25 seconds longer due to more item pickups and door transitions. For every speedrunner of the game this is in understandable since ingame time is what they naturally aim for. TASers though mainly aim for lowest framecount no matter what game.

About your rout decision though, are you sure you will be able to get speedbooster and wave without varia? Because if you need to stop at the pipebugs (unavoidable without the pausescreen abuse) it won't save time to wait with kraid. Though maybe in a TAS the optimal route with pause abuse (no real option though) would be norfair pickups-phantoon-draygon-kraid-ridley...

Ah, hadn't thought of that. I know it's possible to get to the bubble room with only 2 e-tanks and 1 reserve on console, but the time spent getting energy back from the bugs probably doesn't make it worth the trouble.

I liked how you left yourself with 1 point of health during the Mother Brain fight.

My opinion is still that the most entertaining parts of speedruns is to see the little dances people do while waiting for things to happen on-screen, such as the statue leading to the Tourain elevator.

Thoose also happen to be some of the most fun places to TAS :P

I'm sure the answer's obvious (as doing it in real time is well, hard lol) but why don't people use this route for speed runs? it seems to be more efficient. (though I imagine Phantoon would be a nightmare)

The fact that it is impossible to 1 round phantoon on console makes the route instantly slower, and besides that the entire wrecked ship and entering it for that matter would be next to impossible.

Besides, compared to the route speedrunners use this is only about 5-6 seconds faster in the end (well plus some more small gains that are only possible in a TAS.)

Wrecked Ship and entering it with this route is hella sure not impossible. You've TASed so much that you've begun to underestimate the skill level of console players with this game these days. :P

Not talking about faster, it would sure be slower, but remember Smokey's low%? He sure got to WS with DBJ that's not a problem. I'm sure you can kill Phantoon with regular shots and missiles (+ supers but not vice choice maybe).

Yeah but the thing is that you have to enter WS (Yes not impossible but very hard) and then do the whole WS after that quickly without dieing. Phantoon would probably take 4 rounds btw, at least 3. You could save after phantoon but that eradicates even further all gains of the route. The ammo management for WS is very heavy as is the health management. (even in a TAS it's very hard to keep your ammo at such a level that you don't need to refill at the pipe bugs in norfair)  And in a unassisted run it should be quite hard to cross the pit with spike leading to gravity getting hit less then 3 times, 180 damage. (your max is 199).

This is why WS is next to impossible IF aiming for speed. If you let time not be a factor the only hard part should be phantoon which should be quite hard with only 1 E-tank and no varia making his fire do 40 (or 60?) damage.

Fighting Phantoon first would be slower on console, since you can't 1-round him. I guess maybe you could 2-round him, though, and it wouldn't waste time.

You need wave for that and it would still cost more time then it gains. 3 Round could be possible with just missiles, but unlikely.
