Soo... I had an idea for a new hack. It's a simple idea: Cram the game utterly full of random ideas without worrying about anything making sense. Make it possible for a thousand different things to happen, and not tell the player anything ahead of time.
I've gotten a lot of experience hacking Super Metroid lately, so I can manage quite a bit; I'm planning to do most or all of the programming for this hack.
I have virtually no experience with graphic hacking or sound, though, so I won't be able to do much with that, unless someone else decides to help. :/

Anyways... Here's the reason I'm posting: I'm not creative enough to come up with a thousand different ideas, and I'm also pretty lousy at getting myself to do anything.

Anyone that has an idea for this, either send me an IM or e-mail (the whole idea for the hack is that the player doesn't know all that's been added) with a preferably detailed explanation of your idea. Pretty much any idea is welcome, even if it's absurd (ergo Insanity Hack). The main kind of ideas I don't want are ideas that limit what the player can do.
As I said, I've had a lot of experience with the assembly programming, so I can manage quite a bit as far as code is concerned. But if it involves new graphics or drastic changes to graphics, it's not going to happen unless someone else volunteers to work on that, or teaches me how to do that.
Also, something drastic like an entirely new beam is not *likely* to happen. If it's a really, *really* good idea, I'll try to implement it, but some things are just too hard and take too long to do.
An example idea I plan on doing: Make the transitions between pause screens much faster. Simple and nice.
A good, detailed idea: Make the Bomb Torizo die in one hit from bombs. Bonus points for being incredibly easy to do. I probably won't do that *now* since it's too obvious.
A bad, undetailed idea: Put in a Dark suit.
A bad, limiting idea: Enemy X kills Samus in 1 hit. (There should be a *really* good reason for any instant deaths. I want the game to be interesting, not annoying)
A good, complex idea: Make a new item that causes random effects at random intervals. Effects can be any of the following: healing Samus (1-100 energy), hurting Samus (1-50 energy), unequips everything, temporarily give her hyper beam, cause momentary paralysis, etc...

::edit::
The map will be the last thing I decide on. I'm sure many ideas will impact it, so right now I'm just going to leave the options open (AKA I have no idea what to do with it yet. :P).
Oh, that reminds me, if you have a room you want me to use, that works great as an idea as well. Detail is much appreciated, and if you can send me an ips containing the room, that would be best.
::/edit::

Now... I don't want to sound mean, but it's probably best if I say this ahead of time.
If you send an idea to me, it will be purely my decision if I use it, tweek it, or just discard it, though I will discuss it with you. I'll keep a list of ideas with credits as well, just in case somebody really cares about that.

So uh... the intent of the hack is to just change the original Super Metroid in many small ways? Or is there more to it than I am seeing?

MOD EDIT:  Idea deleted.

More or less, yes, that's the intent. Lots and lots and lots of 'easter eggs' to allow the player lots of abilities, options, and challenges.

and though I'm repeating myself...

<font size=5>PLEASE PM, IM, OR E-MAIL IDEAS</font>

Ideas have just been deleted and PMed to Kejardon.  Come on, guys.

And Drewseph, I'm not sure if this falls under the category of minimodding or not since it's not an administration rule that's being broken, but we can handle it ourselves.

Kej, this actually intrigues me despite my general dislike/apathy towards hacks.  If I have any ideas I'll definitely send them your way.

Awesomeness++!!!!

Can't wait to play it. Any idea on how long it'll take? I've wanted to make a hack for a while now, but I'm too lazy and wont be able to keep up with it... final year of high school. If I get any good ideas I'll PM them to ya  Wink

Sounds kind of like the second quest thing from Zelda taken to extremes.  You know, the first game establishes the rules and the second one breaks them. :P  A few things might come to mind...I'll have to think about it.  This sounds pretty cool -- a new emphasis on exploration, not just terrain but what might happen.  A bit different from the OMG HARD HARD HARD hacks that have been mentioned before. :D

You really should put a Size 24 Bolded text "PM your ideas to me, don't post them here"

Once this hack's out, will we be allowed to post all the crazy shit that we find in a thread somewhere?

I can't exactly stop people from telling what ideas they had, but I'd prefer that you didn't - it'd basically be spoilers. As Chanoire said, the whole idea of this hack is that you *don't* know what's different, so you just try things and see what happens.
If you really want, I'll post all the ideas and stuff in a new topic and label it spoilers when the hack is done, but it'd ruin the experience to read the spoilers before playing through the game thoroughly.

I think what Izo was asking was whether people could discuss what they find as they play, rather than posting what ideas they suggested before people get there.

A final percentage of things discovered would be neat, but I imagine it wouldn't really be feasible.

Ooh. Sorry, misread that.
Yeah, that'd be fine, but they'd still be spoilers. And of course, if you're going for a high percentage, you can't post ideas you came up with. :P
Of course, a lot of ideas are going to be blatantly obvious, but I guess that's to be expected - a lot of items in the original game are also obvious.

Double-posting because last post is half a week old... (is this allowed or should I edit my previous post anyways?)

I haven't actually started working on any ideas specifically for Insanity Hack yet, I'm trying to finish everything Drewseph needs in his hack real quick, and documenting a ton of stuff at the same time.

On the plus side, I think I just cracked a significant part of Samus's pose handling code. Meaning it'll be pretty easy to add new physics abilities for Samus. For example, I could probably make a certain button combination cause Samus to go directly from aiming down in midair, facing right, to super jumping diagonal up left, with minimal effort.

I already have a few ideas that are going to rely on this. Some are probably easily guessed, one is going to make everyone go O_O. If anyone has any good ideas for this as well, I'll gladly put them in. :)
