As soon as you have speed booster you can get screw attack. I prefer this method because it takes a little more skill and timing to pull it off.
The room that has the missile blocks (easy way to get screw attack) will be deemed the "middle". Also before you start it is well advised that you find the speed block in the floor so you know where to jump. You need the save room to the right and the "Fire" room to the left as running space.
Start in the "Fire" room and go as far left as you can and freeze the Helmet head guys (I'm not up on the names of enemies so...) Before you run right through the door charge your beam. As you enter the "middle" shoot the Fire guy and then quickly shoot the door. In the Save room when you hit max velocity press down to charge up a shinespark (I usually do this on the right side slope so that I can turn shoot the door, jump and press left and thus run back up the left side and through the door). Once in the middle press down immediately. kill the fire enemy with a missile and stand over the aforementioned speedbooster block and jump.
That's all there is to it. I find it to be a little more rewarding due to a little more work necessary to obtain the screw attack this way. Enjoy.
