For the record, I think screamo is shit. Melodic is probably my favorite sub-genre, since it focuses more on the melody (hence, melodic) than anything else.
It's awful because it sounds terrible, but I don't think music has to be light in tone or gentle or whatever to be good if that is what you are implying. I've only heard one song by Owl City and I don't particularly like it (it's pretty uninteresting), but it was better than that song anyway :P
In terms of metal, I've only really got into Sabbath and Metroid Metal, because typically, the vocals are just awful, the guitar parts are wank and it's all about how fast the drums are.
It's not something you can describe in words, but you can definitely differentiate the two genres based on how they sound. It's kind of like trying to state the differences between action RPGs and action-adventure games. The differences can be minute, but noticeable.
I guess that what one would describe as 'heavy' is relative as well. Plus you have to account for 'inflation' if you will - I'm talking about how successive generations push the bar on what is considered heavy or hardcore. In my mother's day, 'Wild Thing' was such a hardcore crazy rock song that parents and churches were worried about it. Today you can hear that song on elevators.

Screamo should have nothing to do with metal, it's basically screaming to guitar riffs and double bass and calling it metal. However, in terms of newer metal bands, Nightwish is actually a decent metal band, and possibly one of the more melodic. But most people just think it looks cool these days to have terrible vocals and go as crazy as possible with the double bass instead of just trying to make some nice melodic metal. I am involved with several bands in the local music scene, and there are always those bands that complain about being annoyed by gigging with screamo bands.

Yeah, and it ends up giving a bad name to the metal genre in general.
Nightwish is awesome, certainly in my top 10 bands. I haven't found any other bands that can truly replicate the feeling they have. Wntersun is also an awesome band, check it out if you haven't already.
I just can't stand hearing Bodies anymore. The number of video game related videos on youtube with that song playing in the background is just barely worse than the amount of videos with Crawling in the background.
