I recorded a 37 min SS last week, but I was unhappy with the number of mistakes in it.  There are still mistakes in my latest run, including screwing up the Kraid quick-kill(!), but I somehow pulled off a 36 minute single-segment!  Much of the time saved is from the Phantoon fight.  That fight seems to be extremely luck-based.  Sometimes he takes forever to open his eye, and then if you miss that first shot, he can either reappear immediately, or he can again take forever.  Phantoon was very slow in my 37 SS, leaving me with a 1 min 30 sec fight.  He still took a while to open his eye this time, but I saved over 20 seconds.  I was shocked when I saw the final time of 36 minutes!  I am hoping to get the run posted very soon.  8-)

Wow.  Just wow.  The SS record has the same clear time as the segmented record.  I don't think I've seen that in any other metroid game.  I'll definitely watch this.

A serious question: would this run obsolete both of the current any% records? Like, if we would have a :36 SS run that is more fascinating than the segmented one just by definition, why would we want the segmented one that isn't even faster? Judging by the fact that the alternative ending of Smokey's run not using the murder beam on MB hasn't made it under 00:37, I'd say the difference between it and griggski's run is within a negligible margin.

Awesome! But if a 36 SS is possible, isn´t then a 35 segmented run possible?

Until griggski announced his run, I was absolutely sure that every one of SM records could be improved by at least two minutes. And now I am convinced. :)
There are a lot of possible yet unused tricks that could not be feasible in an SS run due to their technical complexity and/or luck factor, but now that we don't have to worry about an SS run, somebody should think of doing a 00:34 segmented one.

I feel a little bad for Smokey, though: getting both of your runs obsoleted in one day surely sucks. :)

Yeah, awesome work griggski! I really can't wait to see this run man. Improving yourself so much is really awesome. My respect to your patience for this!

I agree. At least this can be a good motivation for him to improve the segmented run in case griggski won't decide to blow everything away with a sub 0:36 one by himself being in such a good speedrunning form currently. :P

Well, I've just started work on improving the 100%.

Naw, I'd bet that smokey would love seeing his records broken. The point of speed running is that it's not about the runner; it's about seeing the game beaten as quickly as possible. Any way a person can contribute is awesome, and smokey still has the satisfaction of knowing that his two runs inspired others to keep playing, as well as made popular some speed tricks.

Well, if that's the case then it's awesome.

BTW, I adhere to the same policy and thus love reading some of the SDA topics containing those endless "my tricks were/are being/would be stolen!" rants. :D

IMO, Smokey's :36 segmented should stay.  It might be a little faster ( I haven't seen either :36, but whatever), and the segmented uses saves, which takes more time.  Although, I do believe a :36 SS to be much more impressive than a segmented.  I just feel Smokey's is closer to the goal of a speedrun, as it is segmented.

I would think single segment would be closer to the "goal" of a speed run than a segmented one would be, but that's me. However, the goal is to complete it as fast as possible, saves or not.

Big congrats my friend, you've accomplished something I've been trying forever to do now. Can't wait to see this run.

I got another 36 SS tonight, so it's nice to know that it wasn't just a one-time thing.  I was happy to pull off some of the tricks that I missed in the other run (shinespark before gravity suit, Kraid quick-kill), and I considered mailing this one to replace the other run, but there were enough other mistakes that I'll just let the first run stay.  Nate, I mailed the tape last Tuesday, so you should be receiving it any day now.

I'd say that mostly depends on the mistakes and/or lost opportunities in the current run(s). But I believe in griggski. %)

Please don't hold your breath, but I would certainly LOVE to produce such a run.  I'm trying to get a 0:35 any way possible, be it segmented or SS.  I know, "If you can get a 36 SS, then 35 segmented should be a piece of cake"...it's easier said than done.  I make plenty of mistakes when I play, and I don't magically stop making them when doing a segmented run.  Also, stopping to save takes time, so the time I lose in an SS with each mistake may be cancelled out by not saving.  I'm sure I could get 35 if I ever manage to have that "perfect" run; you know, the one where I don't make stupid mistakes, all of my tricks are executed flawlessly, and Phantoon opens his eye quickly every time.  Honestly, it has been a while since I've completed a segmented run; the latter part of the game is my forte, so I may be able to get closer to a 35 than I realize.  I'll keep working on the segmented, with the occasional SS attempt thrown in for good measure.  Wink

I'm sooooo going to get a 34 segmented!  (sarcasm)

Well, honestly, I'm still a total n00b at this game and haven't completed it.

I would really enjoy watching a SS 35.  That would be so awesome.  I think maybe you can, because although I don't have much experience with SS runs, I noticed you got your 36 SS shortly after announcing you got a 37.  So give it a try.

yeah, i'm less than a third through his run, and there have already been more than enough mistakes to allow 0:35. however, whether he chooses to continue working to improve it is of course his choice.

He can get a 35. I'm a good friend of griggski, and I've seen both his 36 ss runs.  He just needs a near flawless run.

I do believe he will get a 35, be it ss or not.

Yet another 36 SS; this makes 3 in the same number of weeks.  The latest was about 30 seconds faster than the tape I sent in, and it still had some bad mistakes in it.  I've decided to focus completely on SS runs.  aiwebs_016  I'm sure that sooner or later I'll get a 35 SS.

Nate, have you finished watching the run?  What do you think?  Be brutally honest - I can take it.  Wink
