This is my first good speedrun. Sadly, it required a bit of tool assistance, but, nonetheless, I have done it. 1:37 and 33% items. Not really sure if this is good or bad for a TAS, but I'm pretty proud of it.
Oh, I play it constantly. Fact is, I just suck at speedruns, because my memory kinda sucks, and I never really have a route planned(I play for the boss fights.). This took me about 3 days, to do, from start to finish. I'll try to improve my speedrunning, right now, planning on having a go at ZM or fusion, but probably will start another SM run sometime, perhaps with a bit of planning.
And yeah, before this, my best time on a metroid game was ZM, about 2:10. I'm proud of getting under 2 hours. :P
The Zebetites didn't help. 45 missiles...heh. Yes, doing an emulated non-tas with ZM actually. I decided on that. Yes, I plan to, BioSpark. Must remember, this is my first speedrun. Ever.(goes to look at TAS videos) The only real TAS stuff is savestates on elevators, and before the more difficult rooms(I have no idea if that is all TAS is, or if I'm missing something), and slowdown on the bosses(woulda done otherwise, but want to make a video of em(not sure how I'm gonna do that. I recorded all 9 bosses, but with ZSNES, and all in separate slots. Luckily, ZSNES has 9 video slots.)
At the moment ZSNES is a really poor emulator for true TAS-ing. You'll want to switch to Snes9x ( http://code.google.com/p/snes9x-rr/ ). I expect ZSNES2.0 to be a lot better than 1.51, but, well, it's anyone's guess when (or even IF) ZSNES2.0 will be released. Recently they've opened up an "unofficial" recruitment for the team though.
I am more familiar with ZSNES. What sort of features makes Snes9x better? Oh, and how do I play an SMV file in ZSNES?
The primary things that the latest branch of Snes9x does that ZSNES does not are Re-Recording and Frame Advance. Both of which are elementary to true TAS-ing. ZSNES is a pure emulator, Snes9x is a TAS emulator. For pure emulation, ZSNES does offer better game compatibility and support. But, it simply is totally unusable for TAS-ing.
At the moment ZSNES does not play SMV at all. And I'm not sure whether ZSNES2.0 will.
I think you will get the most out of making a TAS if you study speed running some more first. There's alot of planning, patience, and attention to detail needed in order to do it right, and your time should really be less than half of that.
