Relevant text:Here's some weapon info for Mega Man 10 if you haven't figured 'em out already:
Chill Spike Freezes enemies, then you can switch to another weapon and finish them off. Works surprisingly well. I wish we could use the enemy as a stepping stone while it's frozen, but it's not like we don't have enough mobility items already. Placing a spike on the floor or walls deals much more damage.
Commando Bomb You can change its direction with the d-pad. Additionally, if you hit the wall or floor, the explosion deals more damage.
Rebound Striker This is really cool: each bounce on the wall adds 1+ power to the ball. This weapon is also multi-directional like Metal Blade and Pharaoh Shot. Bouncy bouncy!
Solar Blaze This weapon is a mystery to me. People love it, but I find it kinda weak for how close you need to be to activate the spread shot fast enough. Anyway, if you hit the enemy with the core, the spread comes faster.
Thunder Wool Lightning bolt hits multiple times (who said lightning can't strike the same place twice, right?). If you place a cloud over a pit with those annoying parachute enemies, the thunder will kill them before they get to you.
Triple Blade Each blade deals damage separately, like Magma Bazooka. Hit an enemy with all three blades for awesome damage. Works even against bosses.
Water Shield Each bubble deals damage separately. I'm not a fan of the spread, when I have like 3 bubbles left I just get rid of 'em for a new shield. One full Water Shield kills the stomper enemy.
Wheel Cutter You can hold the wheel in front of you as a shield. Touch a wall with the wheel in front of you and it'll take you wheeee... up. Many rooms are cut short with this, because sometimes there's no time or space to call Rush before enemies show up. In a particular tower level later this is freaking awesome.
Rush Coil and Jet combo A trick introduced in Mega Man 9, where you jump on Rush Coil and immediately switch to Rush Jet to land on it really high. In Mega Man 10 this can be used, for example, to reach the top path in Nitro Man's stage (as an added tidbit, notice that up there you may shoot the red switches to cancel the trucks temporarily).
By the way, the three secret weapons in the game were leaked. They're three exclusive weapons from the Game Boy Mega Man games. So the bosses of the Special Stages are probably the exclusive GB bosses.
Finished Hard mode. That was probably the most fun I've had with any game this year. Great stuff.
Not really looking forward to fighting Nitro Man H without taking damage for the crown... but this game seems much more forgiving than MM9 for 100%, and I was patient enough to 100% MM9, so I'm diving in.
Master plan:
Tomorrow: challenges for a change of pace. Saturday: speed-run for the achievement. Sunday, if all goes well: Mr. Perfect and cleaning up for 100%.
Relevant text:How the hell did I not pay attention to the Wily2 (stage) music? That's absolutely brilliant. I'm totally appreciating the soundtrack better on my second run.
At Wily2 now. Hopefully I can finish the fortress tonight.
Relevant text:Super Hero changes some of the level layout, many puzzles (Galaxy level becomes famously devilish on SH), and enemy placement. It's not added enemies, it's different enemies. Feels like a different game. My favorite extra mode in MM9.
Started Hard in MM10. Tis awesome. Only killed two guys so far, Pump and Blade. Now Strike.
Relevant text:I just thought MM9 was more memorable, and the weapons are more fun to use. But 10 is really, really good, up there with the best. :)
I'm gonna play Hard mode tonight, then try some more challenges. Mr. Perfect seems much easier this time around, because you can achieve it on Easy mode, and (so I heard, didn't test or pay attention) it might be possible to save your progress between Wily levels.
There is a ton of content for such a simple game, and then there are three more levels and Bass and Endless to download. Looks like my MM9 total play time of 95 hours might be surpassed.
Relevant text:Thanks Toozin. :) Will post my NMH2 impressions when I play it.
So, Mega Man 10.
tl;dr version: I loved it, Inti, my babies, etc. And 9 is better.
Played and finished Normal mode in 1:55, as Mega Man. Also finished 26 of the challenges in Challenge Mode.
I will break down my mini-review into what I think matters in a Mega Man game, plus the extras. This review is aimed at those who haven't played the game. I'll avoid spoilers, don't worry.
Robot Masters Just as fun to fight as Mega Man 9's, I found. Patterns are simple, yet somehow quite unforgiving. I would not recommend choosing Blade Man first, he was tricky to defeat with the Buster and getting the hang of his pattern is a painful process when you have two lives or so. My first Robot Master in 10 was Strike Man.
Stages Level design is classic Mega Man, where most of the challenge comes from timing jumps rather than surviving an enemy assault, and each level features an exclusive gimmick. There's the infamous disappearing block segment here and there, and I thought Commando Man's level was BRUTAL my first time through. Glad I didn't choose him first. Some levels have major branching paths. It's not every level like Mega Man 6, but you'll find that when they appear the choice is welcome. Without spoiling anything, there are a handful of surprises at the fortress that will make Mega Man fans smile.
Arsenal Nice stuff, Nitro Man's weapon in particular. If you hold the button, Mega Man will hold the wheel in front of him, and if you touch a wall while holding the wheel, Mega Man will rise. They're fun weapons and I'm sure I'll find more use for them. Nothing broken like Jewel Satellite or Black Hole Bomb, which is actually kinda disappointing, and the projectile spammer is a lot weaker than the Metal Blade and 9's Laser Trident. It's also worth noting that you can switch weapons on the fly, which is MUCH better especially if you have a Classic Controller available. There are three extra slots for weapons on the menu AND at the save screen, and they say we're getting three Special Stages DLC, so commence hype for three more weapons.
Music Nitro's music is the trailer music. My favorite tune in the game. Blade grew on me, perhaps because I went through his level one million times until I finally killed him. There are some cool tracks on the fortress, and actually several boss themes. Wily Machine is frantic (oh, sorry about the spoilers, Wily is the final boss... who would know). Overall the soundtrack is a little shy, but still competent.
Challenge Mode There are two types of challenges. The first type consists of 88 preset challenges that will test your platforming abilities, teach you how to properly use weapons and (as far as I heard) make you defeat bosses with handicap and such. I've done the first 25, and they're almost like practice mode. The second type are 12 achievements like Mega Man 9, and yes, Mr. Perfect is there (clear the whole game without getting hit), though you can just play on Easy and still nail it. Or him.
Comparison with other Mega Man games Mega Man 9 left a better taste, maybe because (and you'll have to forgive the following) it was new. 9 is also a more polished game as far as story and presentation are concerned, the ending is a lot more satisfying (I was disappointed that there wasn't an enemy cast roll and amusing Robot Master images during 10's credits). This whole thing makes you realize how much of a gem Mega Man 9 is, it was a classic since the day it came out. But 10 is a very solid entry, definitely better than 1, 6 and every other non-8-bit installment.
I would not mind a game like this every other year for the rest of my life. To me, this is gaming perfection, and I feel totally at home here.
Relevant text:I find him one of the easiest. What I hate in Rockman Rockman is the rematch level with the Robot Masters. Way too hard with only one health bar (well, not exactly, but it's insane if you hit the checkpoint too soon).
My new game pile:
Wii Fit Plus and Dante's Inferno aren't mine, they're presents.
I have too many games to play. :\ This is actually kinda sucky because I'm afraid I'll blow through them without enjoying them just so I can play the next one. Let's hope I can invest enough time on each.
Mega Man 10 is downloaded. Can't play it right now, will do tonight. Cannot freaking wait!
Relevant text:Back from Florida with a crapton of games.
Bought: BioShock 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, No More Heroes 2, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, New Super Mario Bros. (the original for the DS, I played it but it wasn't my copy), plus a black Wiimote and black Nunchuk.
Got as a present from my brother for no reason, I love him: Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Bought and already played: Scribblenauts. I like it, but the controls suck real bad, and I got the same gripe that I have with inFamous, that I really admire what they did with the world and how much stuff you can see, but the game part, what they present as challenge, is kinda underwhelming. Played about halfway through, don't know if I'm gonna continue because I gotta download and play Mega Man 10, DAMMIT.
Relevant text:Going to Florida in a couple of days.
Games to play: All portables. I'm bringing the DS with Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, Mega Man Zero 1-4 and ZX and Advent, Contra 4.
Games to buy: No More Heroes 2, BioShock 2, Arkham, Shattered Memories, Muramasa, maybe Scribblenauts.
Relevant text:The damage you deal on Hard is actually the same or almost the same as Normal. What's brutal is the damage you take. (This only applies to bosses on Hard by the way. On DMD, their defense is pretty much tripled.)
One good thing to know about Griffon is that it's a ranged fight. Choose Guns and other projectiles for offense, forget your Devil Arms, or at least their melee moves.
For Griffon 3, DT'd Grenade Gun-rolling (shoot GG, immediately roll to cancel recoil, repeat) not only shaves off good health, but also dodges a couple of annoying attacks like the lightning curtains.
Alternatively you can try hitting the jackpot, Griffon offers a critical hit chance too. Griffon has two weak spots: the head and the core. Charge up Meteor-Lv2 with Ifrit and release as Griffy leans to screech. If you time it right, the Meteor will hit him once in the head, go through his body and hit the core for double damage.
Griffon, however, is posing much more of a threat, since spamming him with handgun bullets doesn't work anymore (that did insane damage to him on normal). And I'm not good at dodging his attacks at all.
Griffon 2? That's not a very good fight. You basically have to use an exploit to win unscathed (for some reason he loves repeating the dive bomb attack over and over depending on where Dante stands). I just resort to DT'd E&I spam from the top of the first mast in front of him.
Nelo 2 is great, though. You can trap him in a loop with Ifrit. :)
Relevant text:It can also deflect Nightmare's limb stabs (reward: free stun), and get rid of the tentacles at Underworld without any damage. Rolling Blaze is all kinds of awesome.
Relevant text:There is one really cool strategy against Shadows.
I don't know if you noticed that several enemies in the game have critical weak spots. Against Shadows, you can jump straight up on top of their lance attack (you hear a growl before they launch it) and then blast their face with Ebony & Ivory. If you manage to bury enough bullets in 'em, they'll turn red instantly and give you a 300 Orb prize. It's very very awesome and prevents long fights.
You should note that Shadows are actually pretty docile enemies if you don't tease them too much. Get close to one, lock on and watch as it circles around you, just watching. This is where the solid combat system shines. If you use a Shotgun to expose their core, it won't take long at all, but you'll make them really mad and they'll be more aggressive. If you go with E&I they'll still fight back, but less aggressively.
They are actually my favorite enemies in the series. :)
Relevant text:That's really weird. Maybe we're wrong. So many games of the type, and you can always choose the difficulty.
But don't give up. If you can beat Normal, you can beat Hard. And I am definitely, 100% sure the game won't force you Dante Must Die difficulty once you beat Hard, so after this run you can do your upgrading and scavenging back on Normal.
My problem's that the game was difficult enough for a nice challenge. I'd rather chill through it and enjoy the atmosphere and everything on a second playthrough, so it's somewhat a downer for me.
But wait, you were forced to save the file on Hard? Are you sure you didn't _select_ Hard after beating the game? I'm 97% sure I finished like 5 Normal runs on the same file before even trying Hard mode.
Relevant text:Hard mode will grow on you. I only do my runs on Hard these days, and I really, really sucked when I first played the game.
Hard is awesome because of the enemy placement. Enemies that give you more Red Orbs will appear much sooner. There's even a weaker ghost of Phantom (er... no pun), that respawns indefinitely in the courtyard and gives you 500 Orbs per kill. Best way to farm money ever.
And yeah, the atmosphere in DMC1 is very unique. Still the best environments in the series, and a very good looking game for early PS2.
Relevant text:We played a lot of inFamous, some RE5 and tried some demos, so there was no time for 16-bit unfortunately. But we often play Super Mario World on the SNES, taking turns for 96 exits or racing in the fastest route, and it's always an incredible experience.
Relevant text:Going to a friend's house in a few moments for a huge gaming marathon. Resident Evil 5, Super Mario World and Street Fighter II (both on a real SNES!), Dead Space and inFamous on the menu.
Relevant text:Stinger his face, dodge whatever he throws at you, repeat.
For an easier kill, buy Air Raid and spam the lightning bolts. On Normal and Hard this works just fine.
Or you can kill him in about ten seconds doing this. Basically just hit his ass with a jump attack. Some enemies and bosses in Devil May Cry have critical weak spots where you can inflict a ton of damage.
You can also slash Phantom's fireballs back at him, or even better, hit his head the exact moment he releases a fireball for even more damage.
This game always provides a ton of different methods to defeat bosses, just don't give up.
Relevant text:I'm definitely getting BioShock 2. I hear it's very similar to the first game, and I think BioShock is more like the "experience" kind of game that I prefer replaying only when it's fresh, so it's good that I haven't played the original since early 2009.
Relevant text:My oldies-to-play list of 2010 still looks like this:
Nintendo - Super Mario 64, Galaxy - Metroid Prime, Echoes, Corruption - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess - Star Fox 64
Rare - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest - Banjo-Kazooie, Tooie
Capcom - All 8-bit Mega Man games (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9) - Mega Man ZX, Advent - Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3 - Okami
Konami - Contra, Super C, Contra 4 - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia
Sony - God of War, God of War II
Suda - No More Heroes
But I'll be crossing out something there tonight or tomorrow.
Relevant text:Woot, finished Ninja Gaiden Sigma on Hard, 100%. That was awesome.
Dark Dragon Blade is kinda sucky, or I just couldn't use it right. It's heavy, and took like two full combos to kill the orc enemies in the city. Still, it looks cool, and the charged attacks are great. Worth as a caught-'em-all prize.
Relevant text:Almost done with my Ninja Gaiden Sigma 100% Hard run, Chapter 17.
Nothing huge to report, except the boring, boring, boring Fiend Challenge at Zarkhan Stadium. 80 Ogres? Yuck! At least the prize was a Spirit of the Devils and not some consumable. Still, yuck.
I have close to 10 million Karma, and I've been sweeping most areas I go back to, but didn't bother with the Monastery underground. As far as major ranked battles go, I got them all so far.
Oh, and I think I got an extra Life of the Gods. When I was exploring for timed fights, I found both chests at the Monastery Annex closed, and one of them had a Life of the Gods. I'm absolutely sure I got it before, because I'm following a huge checklist and being pretty strict about it. Glitch?
Relevant text:So I restarted my Hard mode 100% run on Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
Still haven't learned my lesson and did not create multiple saves. It bothers me to see an abandoned save floating out there along with my complete files... #OCD (Do you people Tweet? Witty hash-tagging is the new HTML </end> tag, haha.)
Now I have a list with all Fiend Challenges handy. I don't care about the prizes that aren't permanent upgrades, though I am aiming for at least all kills. It's not a Karma run because I'm not being that careful with UTs and stuff, but I want to fight every fight in the game.
At Chapter 7 now, right before the Fiend Challenge I had missed. That was pretty fast actually. Didn't waste my Talisman of Rebirth against the Chapter 6 final battle, that's a first.
